Hesitation on Acceleration/rattle on slow down

Post by slow-mo » Wed Jun 24, 2009 2:45 pm

2002 Dodge Neon SOHC, ATX, Approx. 126000 miles

Alright, so lately I've noticed the car bogging out a bit upon acceleration. It happens the most when I first start the car and attempt to drive forward (never does it in reverse?). It'll start to move, nearly stop and hesitate (by hesitate I mean I can hold the gas down, but it more or less feels like a build up) then suddenly go. It doesn't do this if I punch it though. It'll do it throughout a normal drive as well, say after stopping at a stoplight or stop sign. It's yet to die, but a couple times has felt like it was going to. It doesn't do this every time I start/stop either. To be honest, it seems like it's not getting an adequate amount of fuel or like something is clogged, but I don't know enough to really say for sure.

The second issue is that usually when I'm coming to a stop either getting off the highway or having to slow down rather quickly in traffic, the car will drop in RPMs and rattle like crazy. I have to put the car in neutral then back in gear to get it to stop. This has happened a lot the last couple years I've owned the car. Usually it goes away for a bit after I change out the plugs and/or wires. I just changed the plugs and wires about a week maybe 2 weeks ago. Also problems are about 2x as bad since I'm having to run the A/C. Been 90F-100F with high heat index :(

I tried searching the forums and didn't see anything directly related to this, so I wanted to ask. Also a general google search pulls up a lot of coil pack issues, clogged injectors, o2 sensor, CPS, TPS, or even MAF issues. I'm going to try and run some seafoam through the intake/fuel system figuring it won't hurt even if it doesn't fix it. Anyway, any ideas would be appreciated, thanks guys.

I also thought I would mention, with the A/C or defrost on, I can feel the car rev up and down while driving. I know that some of it would be normal, but it seems different. Would this also be related to the TPS? Another thing I failed to mention is sometimes upon acceleration the car will hesitate, move, hesitate again and nearly die before it finally goes. Again, related to the TPS?

Thanks for the quick response PhillyLS

Have you checked for any codes?

Probably shouldn't listen to anything your penis says, that guy's a dick.
Patience, of course, is a very powerful weapon, but sometimes I start to regret that it is not a firearm.
Too much time spent here is a sign of a bad case of Ownaneonvirus.

Yeah, no codes. Know anywhere that carries a fairly priced TPS? Also, how difficult is it to change? I don't mind the work, I just like a good idea of how long it'll take. Thanks guys.

It is very easy, shouldn't take more than a few minutes. Just the two screws, and the connector. I would check it with a voltmeter to verify it is the problem tho. IIRC BRR's TB adapter How To has the pin outs. It is spring loaded too, so if there is no spring action, that could be a problem. Nothing a new(er) sensor won't fix.

You will need to probe the back of the connector to get a reading. plugged in, key on. If you key on with it unplugged, you will have a CEL.

Cool thanks. I'll check it out and update with my findings.
