what are the chances?

Post by Car6on14 » Tue Jun 30, 2009 8:10 pm

So I notice my shifter has sooooo much play in it lately, its stock, i pop the hood and my shifter bushing is non existant. Well I just ordered booger bushings, and wondered if the ones at the shifter usually go around the time the ones on the trans fail? I cant seem to find close up pix of them to see how tough they look. Im thinking if I gotta replace those too at the same time, I may order & install the mad dog sts...

The ones for the shifter come with the kit, unless you specify otherwise. They usually fair much better than the ones under the hood.

I'd suggest waiting to install the ones at the shifter until you get the STS since the boogers can be a little difficult to get back off the shifter once they're snapped on. If you're not careful you could snap your shift cables since they are somewhat fragile.

According to Jeff they are very easy when you use a couple screwdrivers.

yup. thin, durable flathead screwdrivers work perfectly. on both kinds of boogers.

I was completely missing one of the bushings on the trans when I got my car. I'm talking 5-6 inches of play while in gear, felt like a stick in jello.

The boogers made a world of difference, I can only imagine how much better it is with a short throw.

When you put your boogers on, put a zip tie over the bushing so it won't pop off again.

My tranny one's were in worse shape when I upgraded.

I used WD-40 when removing mine from the shifter 2x. It really helped.

got out my 02 neon chilton book and see theres 2, ive got it all apart and ready to go back together, turns out there was alot of batt acid all around in there, i wire wheeled it to clean it up, hit it with rust stopper and gonna paint black over it. My reverse bushing looks ok btw, but im going to replace it while im in there. Finally, the 2 plastic air lines? that go to my air box are both damaged, going to replace with rubber i think.

I thought you guys were all about ragetek shifter bushing here??? They are held on with a c-clip and slide right off when you need to work on the tranny or the shifter!?!

Dont get me wrong....Jeff from booger is a great guy I just thought the second gen crowd went with rageteks.

What does it mean when my car sometimes pops out of reverse or I can't get it into reverse? There is a lot of play in the stick, about 3-4 inches.

Can you explain these a little better???

Either way you should be fine with just replacing them with rubber hoses.

The plastic lines that I was referring too, one went back to the back of the valve cover (breather line maybe)? and the other went to some line that went back down the firewall, it had an interesting snap connector on it about 10 inches back from the air box, i think they are the only 2 hoses on the airbox besides the main large one that connects to the air intake / throttle body, they are Alot of smaller then that one... anyways, they wer rubbing on some other stuff that may have caused it? I can try and get a pic this weekend maybe if its helps. The plastic seems really brittle / crappy, kinda poor design. I dont think either were doing anything bad by being cracked, i think they are just for emissions, I have the same lines on my chrysler conquest and I re routed both differently from being in my air canister on that car bc being forced induction the valve cover line can push oil out and i didnt want that going into my intercooler piping... im not sure if anyone else car does this, but mine kinda bogs sometimes if i shift quick and at lower rpm 2.5k ish? and i figured maybe i had a vac leak, but its still doing it after I fixed these lines, so as i posted in another thread about bogging, i just think thats how the car is, gotta shift slower or at higher rpm.

Your bushings are probably toast.
