Differences between 99 SOHC and 00 SOHC?

Post by OhNo2.0 » Thu Jul 09, 2009 4:11 pm

I'm looking at a complete rebuild kit on ebay Item # 280317854732 but its saying its only for 96-99? That can't be right, as far as I know the only real difference between the 99 and 00 motors other then the crap outside the motor, is the timing belt tensioner and the exhaust doughnut.

Am I right? Or am I missing something. I can't find a "00" kit with as many parts for the same price, the best I can do is buy seperate parts and it ends up being about another $300 more then this kit.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I think the 99> years had an EGR system. None for the 2000+

The only thing in that kit that I think won't work are some of the gaskets. Possibly the timing belt tensioner pulley if you have a hydraulic one. I think the 00s had mechanical though.

I want to swap to a hydraulic one anyways, I'm hearing the mechanical ones are prone to failure?

Other way around. Then newer Litens mechanical tentioner is suppose to be the best.

I was thinking that...Cause I know anything that is hydraulic tends to leak, leakage = less tension = belt failure

Plus my tensioner has been through 190k...and still going strong *knock on wood*

The valve cover gaskets won't work either. 1gn's were steel VC's

EGR wouldn't be an issue, as the heads at least till '01 still had the port, with a block off plate. IDK what a "timing cover gasket" would be, other than they are throwing generic terms in there, to make it look like you're getting more.

This is a reply from a different seller selling a 95+ kit

"The bearings and rings should fit, but not the full gasket set.

If your car is a 2000, it will need a completely different full gasket set."

Only '95 and a few early '96 cars had the steel valve covers. Same goes for the oil pans.

I like the steel vc - when powder coated gloss black, they look really "vintage"

I may swap to a '96 vc after I put the new head on the ACR
