Oil cooler: Has anybody done this?
Oil cooler: Has anybody done this?
I have always wondered if anybody has attempted an oil cooling system on their neon. Howell sells the addapter. What hoses and Radiator(?) would i need to set this up.
What are the plus sides? cooler engine and better engine life? Anything else?
What the the down sides? More oil and little less gas millage? Anything else?
Thanx!

I hate bumping myself...
I can put a system together for less than $150... Any advice?

what is the cooler i have on top of the kmember where my 96 had a bobble strut? what does that cool then?BlackRoseRacing wrote:no he does not. SRT's and PT GT's have oil coolers. SXT and R/T's do not.
And to answer your question, an oil cooler does not hurt. You won't notice any HP difference, but cooler oil is always better for prolonged life and durability. Thats why most SEVERE duty motors have oil coolers...

Powersteering
That is also the same on an SRT, the little radiator looking thing under the car behind the oil filter is the Powersteering cooler. I'm not sure what BRR is talking about for the SRT having an oil cooler unless he is talking about the fins that are on the area where the oil filter screws on... if that makes any sense lol

I'm no expert but I don't think the heat sink on the oil pan does shit to cool the oil.Diablo0 wrote:PowersteeringThat is also the same on an SRT, the little radiator looking thing under the car behind the oil filter is the Powersteering cooler. OK so... wont hurt gas millage since the motor temps will drop a bit? Will only improve engine life?

for starters.....TOLD YOU SO!
All srt and turbo pt's have an oil cooler....
The main goal of the cooler on the above listed is to help cool the oil before it hits the turbocharger.
Cooler oil will help preformance somewhat, just like changing your 195deg thermostat to a 165thermostat. The best example I can think of is:
you ever notice your car hauls ass when you first start out in the morning? thats because everything is still COOL and tight. Once your car starts to warm up or get hot you start to lose power.
Technically(in english terms) Friction causes heat, heat loses HP&TQ, the cooler the better the HP&TQ........nuff said without getting technical with components and thermal dynamics...

Yes that is what I'm talking about.2002srt4 wrote:The srt has an oil cooler, I had to change mine cause it was pumping oil into my coolant. It is where the oil filter screws into. They run engine coolant around the oil housing to cool the oil.
Also... to help in cooling and added protection you could also go with a larger oil pan like the Moroso that holds I think it was 6.5 quarts. Having a Viper filter on I use about 7.5 quarts. More you can get into the system even it being in the pan will help with cooling....

maybe i'm reading you guys wrong, but most of you seem concerned about the high temperature of the oil, i'm guessing because you're worried about thermal breakdown and what not. from all the informed articles i've read over the years, the bottom line always was that thermal breakdown is really nothing to worry about with modern oils... they are made to keep their lubrication factor far into the extreme ranges of high temps with no problem. so to answer the original question of "will this be worth it", i'd say most likely not. the best thing you can do is let your engine warm up before hammering it, as 90%+ of all the wear on your engine happens at startup and immediately after, as the thicker pasty oil cant lube. you shouldnt ever have to worry about the oil when its hot, unless you run a big turbo that isnt water cooled and you insist on not letting the car run a minute or so after hammering it. if you're trully worried, just switch to synthetic and call it a day
I totally removed the theromostat, it feels nicer when its cold, probably not a good thing for a daily driver, but when i start my car is because im going to floor it so im very happy with that modBlackRoseRacing wrote:for starters.....TOLD YOU SO!![]()

Im not saying start your car up and race it when its cold, the oil still has to get flowing first. What im talking about is when your temp gauge is just barely off of cold, Vs half way.
Obviously you NEVER beat on an ice cold motor, thats just asking for trouble. And as for getting the oil flowing...remember that DCx recomends 5-20w oil so after running for about a minute your engine should be fully lubbed and ready for a beatin...

Im already using synthetic. I figure, if its that hair faster or if i get extra wear-and-tear out of the motor, its worth every penny! Plus a kit is only 100-150 bux, which isnt really that spendy. Think i might do a small kit just for the sake of reviewing it and seeing if its worth it

yeah i use that for my first gen too, but that one was made for that weight of oil... i dont know if this is just for 03+s but that's what my dealer said. why would he say no when he has the chance to make more money?nodestiny wrote:Mobile 1 from Wal-mart. When i got my first free oil change from the dealership, i told them i wanted synthetic and i would pay the differance... They said "well its going to be another $50+ and will have to get ordered so it will take a few days"... As it was mentioned earlier... dealerships seem to be lacking brain function!rice_eater wrote:yeah i use that for my first gen too, but that one was made for that weight of oil... i dont know if this is just for 03+s but that's what my dealer said. why would he say no when he has the chance to make more money?nodestiny wrote:Mobile 1 from Wal-mart. The same dealership also told me that cutting the hole in the hood and airbox on the SRT-4 would give you 25HP
Dealerships are a joke (in most cases)

Ya know, I was thinking, if you decided to boost later, you could user your cooler, run extra line to your oil in on the turbo and run the oil out to the filter agian, that way you could feed cooler oil to keep that baby running cool.

yup! Go...
