Clear coat

Post by latief » Wed Jul 15, 2009 2:44 pm

I just painted my dash with Chrysler specific paint (color-bond 160 Chrysler dark slate ). the paint was great and everything went smoothly and now my interior is complete ....

my question is, should i clear coat the paint for longevity reasons? if yes, what kind of clear coat should i get?

no, the due to the angle of the windshield you will have uber glare. Think of armor all just 10 times worse.

I would think even a satin finish would be too much. Also IDK if it would crack.

Get a carpeted dash pad if you want to protect it from scratches. If you prepped it right the paint shouldn't come off at all. That paint is pretty durable IMO.

is the dash smooth or textured? If its textured it should hide small scratches, not to mention what the hell are you putting on the dash that would scratch it?

If you really want a clear, get a matte interior clear spray.

DO NOT get a carpeted dash pad. One of the gayest things ever

Don't clear it. It will be fine. Just don't throw crap all over it.

another thing to consider is going to a local automotive paint shop and talking to them about getting a "dull" clear. PPG, DuPont, all of the big names do it. that's what i put on my A/C bezel when i painted that.

Remember, our dashes are painted from the factory, and it holds up quite well. I may have to re-do mine soon since the paint is starting to lift on the far right side :-k
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

1. A clear coated dash is not that bad. I am a painter. And smoothed my entire dash completely and painted it black with a high gloss clear. Same type of clear that is on the outside. It has a little glare. But I drove it daily like that for a year and it was fine. Def not OMG HORRID.

2. You can get it painted with a flat clear.

3. The paint you bought is a single stage. Be sure to read the can closely to see how long before you can recoat.
