Does anyone know if SRT and Neon use different rear brake pads? I have SRT rear rotors and I know they're thicker so I was under the impression that the calipers are the same and pads may be a little thinner to compensate. I picked up pads for SRT and after i installed them I made sure the wheels spun freely by hand and they did. I take the car on a short test drive, and when I get back home both rear wheels are hot and I can smell brakes.
So I go to the parts store website and checked the part number for the pads they gave me, it turns out they list the same number for SRT and Neon, is this possible? Oh yeah, I notice on the side of the box ' made in china'
I only used the SRT rotors because I had a new set collecting dust here. I suppose I'll throw my old rotors back on tomorrow and see if that fixes it.

the neon has rear drums. R/T's and SRT-4s have rear discs. If you're referring to the differences between R/T and SRT rear discs, i think the srt rotors are a little thicker, but that's it.
Then again, I've never had a neon with rear discs until I swapped it.

i've seen regular neons with disc rears from the factory its not limited to r/t's and srt's. just thought i'd correct you.
if you've got a good ole ruller just measure the thickness of each rotor and or pad to see the difference.
and dont forget to adjust the ebrake if necessary.

Well, brakes need to be bedded or "broken in." With new pads they will get hot, smoke and smell like crazy until they are bedded. There are procedures that can be done to do this easily.
* two light stops from 25mph.
* two hard stops from 45mph.
* repeat if you feel they aren't set.
if they continue to smoke consistently after doing this then there might be a problem.

Re- installed the thinner R/T rotors and all is well. Weird, the SRT rotors are thicker, but I could still push the pistons back into the caliper about 1/8" before I removed the calipers to install the thinner rotors. Apparently that amount of clearance is not enough.
