Ideas on how to fix blemish CF hood w/pics

Post by sullygully » Mon Oct 03, 2005 1:00 am

Hey guys,

well i just received an SRT carbon fiber hood for a really good deal.

It has some scratches in the clear coat, and some other more major blemishes which look to go right down to the gel coat.

I thought at first I could sand it down and respray with clear, but some of the damage is so far down that it won't be so simple to fix.

SOooooooo i have an idea. What if i paint the hood like this... Image
This would cover all the blemishes perfectly.

ALso, i was thinking mabe instead of black, I could colour match it with my car instead. Heres a quick little doodle i did.

Heres the original hood with the blemishes circled

Or should i just flat black the imperfections then reclear?

ANyways, let me know what ya think.

I kinda like the painting idea, I see it everywhere on other cars, but not on a Neon yet.
Justin- I have nothing but smart ass remarks to add.

Do you mean paint it black or colour match it to the car?

mine got a bunch of scraches on it like that too...i had mine recleared w/ like 6 or 7 coats of clear and it looks amazing. you can still see a few of the scratches, but its not like it was.

the painting it color matched to the car idea sounds kinda cool, i havent seen it done a neon either. but the black would be good as well.

mine's damaged too. I had it painted silver to match my car, leaving a mopar logo still carbon fiber. looks good, but the guy did a bad job colormatching.

I'm strearing towards the flat black look. Its pretty sexy.
Just Re-Clearing the hood wouldn't do it any justice, since some of the larger blemishes are in the gel coat, that can't be sanded out.

I tryed sanding a blemish out on a the one corner, and it doesn' t seem to be helping any.

paint it black and maybe to the edges too just like in the first picture you posted... i think that should look damn good while making it look like that's what is was meant to look like all along  who knows, you might start the next ricer fad
