gas burning question

Post by w0158981 » Sun Aug 09, 2009 11:06 pm

so just checked my gas mileage and i got 300km to a tank. which is horrible.
so im going to check everything. here is my list.
clean air filter
new plugs and wires
check cat
air pressure.

my question. it feels like the problem started after i had my new alternator installed is it possible it is running to hard and eating up gas?
also there is oil located in the tube with my spark plugs could this be a problem.

if you have any ideas let me know please

Oil in the spark plug tubes means you either need new seals, which means removal of the valve cover, or the tubes themselves have worked themselves out a bit.

You say "it feels" like it started after the alternator. What did you feel? I guess, how often do you check your gas mileage, and what is normal for your car? Really, your list should be checked fairly often anyways IMO; especially the last one. I don't think a new alternator is running so hard you have lost major mileage out of a tank of gas either way.

So you got 300km's to a tank. How many liters did you put in the tank on that fill up?

miles or km's per tank means squat. miles per gallon or liters/100km is the only true measurement. figure out the liters/100km and then we can figure out if you have a problem.

god that good i get like 200 to a tank city and 240 highway and i'm not boosted the most likely cause of that could be ur fuel filter cause i have done everything except replace that and that my next step before the 255 pump gets in

you relise neons and sx2.0s are returnless fuel systems and they dont have fuel filters just strainers on the fuel pump....

I've been meaning to put up this topic. It's a damn good question. I get about 200 miles to a full tank. Mostly hwy miles cuz I commute to work 90 miles to work roundtrip. That just doesnt seem rite. But I do kinda have a heavy foot  .

What is your miles per gallon?

Until we know actual fuel economy we can't do much.

Miles per tank is not fuel economy. Miles per gallon or liters/100km is.

Remember Neon fuel gauges are about as accurate as a chinese torque meter.

I've been running pretty good lately. Getting decent mpgs in the 32-35 range. My gf's 04 sxt had the gas light on the other day and i filled it up and it only took 9 gallons.

I think :quotes: I've hit 10 gallons only once. But I havent figured out my mpg since sometimes I cruise to work doing only about 65. Most of the time I'm late and doing between 75 to 80 practically the whole 46 miles to work. Plus it feels like it takes a big gulp of gas just trying to accelerate to the proper speed just to get on the freeway.

My 01 doesn't have a gas light that comes on. Maybe there's something wrong with it but one time i did fill up and it took 11.8 gallons.

yeah but for the manual my car is rated at 34 high and 27 city and i get 24 high and 20 city,
but i think for the neon the cut the hose in the fuel tank to short so you only use like 8 to 9 gallons on the 11 gallon tank.

i guess the best way to tell wat the hell is really going on is to hook a scanner with live feed or a ob2 recorder and watch and see wat your long and short term fuel trim is doing something simple as a tiny exhaust leak will affect that thus throwing your fuel trim out fuel trim tells all secrets it cant keep a secret!..... just like a bad school girl!

Guys, seriously. Miles or KM's per tank means jack shit.

Get a real fuel economy number before you start worrying.

OK, 300km/37.85L of gas = 7.926 kilometers per liter = 18.643 miles per gallon, yes? I don't see what an instantaneous MPG would be good for, or to calculate your MPGs after every gallon of gas. The only way to be more accurate than above, guessing 10 gallons of gas, would be to fill up, drive, and then fill up the exact same way (stop after the first time the pump clicks off) the next time and then divide the actual number of gallons used.

Is that kind of mileage possible though? Sure. I average around 20-25 MPG where I live due to living in the mountains. Better than my V8's though...

looks like that is 25mpg which isn't too bad. Could be a little better, but some tune up and clean up stuff may help.

Auto or Manual?

I have gotten all kinda mileage out of my car lol.

Just last week went to beach and got 36mpg down with ac on, and 37mpg back without ac on.
Driving around town to work or to the store being easy on it I get 24-28mpg.

Last winter I was out in town beating on it like all night, broke an axle too lol. Only got 13mpg that night.
