Future Plans for my baby.

Post by Moparty08 » Fri Aug 14, 2009 3:07 am

So after spending the better part of 3 hours looking at and reading the FAQs and using the search function I finally have a plan put in place. These are all things I plan on doing to my car within the upcoming years. Let me know what you guys think. Some mods are pretty general but that's just because I don't know what brand I will be going with. I'm open to suggestions as well. Let me know what brands you might have had luck with and maybe some to steer clear of.

Comp 400 or bust! Especially if your getting the mag springs. It'll help it breath better with those internals. If your'e staying away from na, you might even want to try a crane 14+

^^^ what he said....plus whats the point of MS with that setup, you arent going to gain much being N/A, and with the cam you are using you wont need a higher rev limit. if anything i'd just get an r/t pcm to help advance timing a bit and give you a higher speed limit, and if you get a mag manifold it will control that as well. if you dont mind spending the extra 2-300$ pick up a mag head and port that and slap it on.
other than that looks good man!

Finding a used '01/'02 R/T or ACR PCM won't be easy, then most of them have SKIM. If your car has SKIM it is not as big an issue.

EDIT: RPM's are only about 50 to 60 higher before the rev limit, and the higher top speed, I have yet to ultilize. To be honest, I really can't tell via the tach that the RPM's are actually any higher.
It does actually make a difference with better octane tho. (with my SE pcm I really didn't get any benefit, just less fuel mileage.

I agree with a more agressive cam.

Speed control will almost have to be sourced as used, as there aren't many new '01 s left on the shelf. If you go to the '03 - up steering wheel availability will be better. At least for new stock.

yeah O.D. i didnt think about that :tardbang: good call skim is a pita. as far as finding them they're around, came across an 01 for 80$ few weeks ago but it has skim.

as for the speed limiter i take advantage of it, +115 anyway, but its all up to the driver and what you plan on doing with it.

I also wanted to note, if you're staying all motor upgrade the tranny to a 3.94(r/t acr) you'll really appreciate having that. So long as you dont drive on the highway for long distances lol.

....and if you get an aem cai it comes with a dry flow filter so the k&n one wouldnt be necessary.

I got my R/T pcm a few years ago on ebay. Didn't know if it was SKIM or not. Put it in a little over a year ago. I get a SKIM comunication error code, but it may be because I have an R/T cluster also. I didn't get the SKIM code with the SE PCM tho. But it works, so either it doesn't have SKIM, or it is broke.

I just wanted the cruise for night time driving. I like using it by setting it to the speed limit so i don't get pulled over. got a big ticket once cause i was having too much fun at night.

I will look into the upgraded trans too. I'd like to stay with the auto 3 speed though don't know what the r/t acr's had. I'm not looking to drag with this thing at all just a fun dd. When you're talking long highway trips like what do you mean long? i think the longest i'd be going for now would be 50 miles and that's about it. Just to boston.

50 miles wouldn't be too bad, but the '02- ? PT 5 speed has the taller o.d. with the 3.94 gears.

Good looking list. The only thing I would suggest is going to a 205 width tire since you will have 7" wide wheels.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

X2!

The 205 50 16 is actually closer to the 185 65 14 in height.

And they ride nicer too. At least mine do. I thought they would be worse. I was wrong. But at least it was in a good way.

Aftermarket intakes are 100% not worth the money. Get something off ebay or fabricate one of your own if shiney pipes are your thing. I can't see spending $175-200 for an AEM intake...

Ok when i was using the faq tables and calcs i came up with the 195. I switched it to the 205. Thanks for helping me refine this. Never had a plan in place just always thought of things that i'd like to do but never got it written down.

Well i'll think about it. They always worried me anyway being up in new england with all the slush and snow in the winter. For the past few years it's seemed we've had a lot of spring flooding. Is it still ok to drive in downpours with a cai? if not then i'll figure something else out.

Yeah, I was gonna tell you that's quite a bit of cash and it's not going to yield a whole lot of gains. But no, CAIs are terrible to drive in the rain. You can get hydrolock...which would pretty much involve a whole new motor

Get a turbo, you'll have a slew of stuff to purchase. Plus they make cool noises

Ok i guess you guys convinced me. Didn't take much. but pretty much my knowledge of turbo is limited to
VROOOOMMMMM PSSSSHHHHHHHHH
I guess i'll have to do some more research.
Screw the cai. Maybe i'll figure something else out. What's the best with a turbo? I don't think i'll run big psi with the turbo just dd friendly maybe 8-10 psi

If it's gonna be a DD, I personally wouldn't bother turboing it. Just from my experience with my Eclipse, you get more headaches when you add things that weren't meant to be there in the first place.

If you wanna turbo it, do it the right way and either completely rebuild the motor, or buy a spare motor and rebuild it and turbo it. Don't try to do it on worn internals and hope for the best. Even 8-10 PSi can do some damage on a motor that isn't used to seeing boost.

yeah that's why i was planning on doing an N/A setup. It's gonna be my dd no plans to go to the track or anything. It's my grocery getter and kiddiemobile. Ok good so i got another angle to it. i think i will definitely stick with N/A then. I just want something that's fun. And like i said above i know shit about turbos.

The only mods that will really do anything are the intake manifold, cam, and header. And that will really just move your power band up the RPM range. Unless you do internals and start to bump compression, you're not going to make much more power at all. More just moving it around.

A boosted car makes TONS more power, but does require a little maintenence here and there. Although by the time you've changed out all these other things, you're going to have the same kinds of problems.

These neon motors are tough buggers though. I ran 10+psi on my own for a long, long time. Way longer than would be expected for all the drag racing and part testing I was doing.

All in all, bolt-ons won't do much but waste your money. Turbo will be a lot more fun, but will go through your money all at once. Glasswars has our kit, and even at less than 6psi, he has no problem taking down any N/A neon on this forum.
ASP - First NGC SOHC in the 13s and the 12s. First SOHC neon over 500whp. First NGC Neon on MS.

Ok well i'm like a pendulum right now. I keep swaying back and forth. Well i guess when the time comes i'll have to figure it out. Turbo definitely sounds good. I'm sure my kids being a little older they might have as much fun as me in a boosted car. estein pm me so we can talk some more about your kit and stuff.

you are about to drop like 10 grand on a neon, just buy and srt-4 and save your self some trouble trust me. If I knew back then when I started I would have bought a new car. Im to deep already, my only alternative at this point is to doa full srt-4 swap. just my two cents.

yea me too. i wouldnt have bought a new car though, i would have left everything stock, except for the suspension, and saved it all up to purchase a turbo kit. kicking myself for it now. but, i'm 18. explains some of it. but not all.

I'm gonna keep it. Maybe someday i'll have an srt on the side too. for now this is my route. Plus i'll save a ton on insurance with just an se instead of srt. Plus i'll have plenty of money each year to put a couple grand into it. once i get a job i'll be working my ass off and then my girl will be working too so instead of my money going all to her she'll have her own.
