Holy S%@T! We almost died!

Post by GreeNeons03 » Mon Aug 17, 2009 9:29 am

So I take my girlfriend to SeaWorld Orlando on our 6 month uhhh...Monthaversary(?) yesterday because she likes to feed the stingrays. Well, were going east on I-4 and about the time we get past Disney the car starts to shake like crazy! I pulled off the next exit and stopped in a gas station walk around the car and everything looks good. I'm thinking they left something loose when I got my car serviced the other day. Nothing I can do about it now, so we continue to SeaWorld.

We have a nice day at the park and leave. We get on the interstate again and head home. I get just past the off ramp for the exit I got off on earlier going the other direction. I'm in the far left lane and there's a loud bang, the car jumps and the front sinks. My tire blew, took out my mirror and damaged my front clip and did a number on my fender. It also took out about half of my splash guard.

I slammed on my brakes to keep control of the car, skidded probably 75 feet down the road and another 20 feed down the side. I get out and asses the damage, I have my girlfriend get out and I get into "fix car mode" I jack my car up and change the tire to the spare, and as I'm tightening the lug nuts, a FHP Road Ranger pulls over from going the opposite direction to help.

He lends me a screw driver so I can get in my door to disconnect and take off whats left of the mirror, it was just hanging by the cord. After everything was said and done, I snapped a few pics and continued on my way. I'm getting new tires today and a mirror tomorrow. I need it done soon cause I leave for Virginia on Wednesday.

Anyway, on to the pics!

Wow. Great job keeping the car under control. Those situations can really get the adrenaline pumping. Its great to see no one was injured.

Like they said though. Swap out the rear tire with the donut.

Damn that sucks. Glad everyone is okay. Looks like the shop you had it at didn't pay attention to your tires... Weird that a sidewall would blow out like that unless it was damaged before. Driving for a long period of time the tires get hot and boom it went.

damn mang looks like you had a fun time. the way the tire looks either it was under inflated or you got a bad tire but at least you kept the beast in control, could have easily ended up alot worse.

Im glad Ive never experienced a blowout and props on keeping it under control.

But I think its funny when people bring in their blowouts and ask me to fix it. I just stare at them for a minute and most of them get what Im saying in my head.

As far as the spare tire thing, The diameter of the spare is smaller then the normal tire so having it on the front may make the diff/traction control a bit confused. One axle is going to be spinning faster then the other. Im not sure if thats an issue with an open diff but Im just throwing it out there.

well im happy to hear that everyone is ok .. :)
and as for your tire ..
i think this would be a good time to go for some 8in rims and a nice wide tire with some good rubber :)

Glad to see you made it through that ok...scary indeed

The spare tire formula works like this....

Drive wheels + Steering Load - 195 width tire + 125 width tire = Bad

Put it in the back
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Speed, temperature and vehicle load at time of blow-out?

What was the condition of the tire prior to the blow-out?

I've had this happen many times with semis... sounds like an explosion from the rear. I was always amazed at the amount of damage caused.

I didn't go to Miami, I went to Orlando. Anyway, I didn't know about putting the spare on the back rather than the front. I know now in case I ever need to use it again. Anyway, that tire had trauma to it. I slid into a curb a while back and that rim/tire took the whole hit. That's when I put my R/T rims on, but when I almost had a blow out with those rims I put these on until I could get new tires. So that's probably why the sidewall failed. Anyway, I got new rubber today, they checked my spare too and said that it should be fine, I'll just check the pressure before I leave on my trip. I'm also getting a new mirror tomorrow so I have that for my trip. The body work will get fixed when I get back.

Picks of the new rubber, sort of:

I had the same thing happen to me with my Kumho tires 1 week after putting them on. I will never own another Kumho tire. I have had my Hankooks on for 3 years and they are just now showing wear.
