Shifter assemblies

Post by Nemesys » Tue Oct 04, 2005 4:08 pm

Are the shifter assemblies the same for all of the 2nd gens? I have an 03 SRT-4 and was going to grab an '02 or '00 shifter from the junk yard. Why? Cause I wanna chop a couple inches off of it to make a poor-man's short throw. So will it fit?

Thank you in advance

Yep, they're all basically the same. With a neon shifter you won't have the chrome shaft or be able to use your stock SRT knob since there is a ring that goes around the top of the rod but since you'll be cutting it off that won't matter. There will also be a spring and bar that holds the stock neon knob on so if you will need to either pull or cut the bar off and take the spring off.

thanks. SOmeone just mentioned to me that I would not be able to use the SRT boot. Is that true?

ANd yeah, I have accidently pulled the srt knob off during an aggressive 1 - 2 shift, those things suck, so I'd be getting a new knob.

When you say pull or cut the stock ball off, is it like the srt knob, just pull up really hard and it will come off?

You can use your stock boot but the bare metal shaft of the stock neon shifter will be exposed unlike the chrome shaft that you have on your SRT shifter.

The stock Neon knob pushes down and turns about a 1/4 turn to remove, thats the purpose of the spring that you'll see when you pickup the neon shifter. You'll have to remove the spring around the shaft since you won't need it and you won't be able to use your stock boot. There is also a small bar that goes through the shifter which like I said, you may need to grind down so it also doesn't hit the SRT boot.

But the shifter will bolt up and be fuction, it'll just require a little modification to the shaft to make it work right with your stock boot.

don't look at the shift knob from the top while taping the bar out to get the knob off, it hurts like a bitch.

This is what a stock '00 shifter with about 3/4" cut off the shift lever looks like with the stock leather boot and an aftermarket knob.

I have since cut even more off the lever, so that now the boot comes all the way up to the top of the beauty ring (the line in the aluminum part of the knob). It looks better overall, feels better, and the boot doesn't pull away from the knob when it's in 2nd, 4th, or reverse.
