1st Gen Rear Disc Swap
Okay, so I did some searching but didn't find everything I need.
From what I've gathered I need the rotors, the calipers, the banjo bolts, the brake lines, and the e-brake cable off a 1st gen.
I've read that I don't need the knuckle or the hub, so I just want to make sure that I don't, and that I don't need anything extra to get it to bolt to my hub.
Also, is the parking brake any better? Because with my drums adjusted really tight with new pads on them I can pull the ebrake handle all the way up and still pull out... I want the brakes to lock up when I pull the lever up.
A buddy is going to get my the parts when he goes to junkyard sunday morning so need an answer soon lol.
Thanks much

your parking brake is messed up somehow. I'd park on huge hills and use the e-brake and i was fine. I'd pull it up slowly in traffic and i would slow down after about 2-3 clicks.
I've got discs and if you pull it slowly it does the same thing. If you pull it all the way to the top it will lock up the rear wheels. I got the tires to chirp at 5-10mph the other day doing that.

Well the cable might be stretched, so would it be beneficial for me to the the disc swap.
And my dad's parking brakes with drums are same way. Brand new pads, all new springs and new wheel cylinder, but just doesn't work well.
I've never been in a 2gn neon that had good working drum brakes.

well, back to your original question. Yes, you can swap first gen discs into second gen neons. The rotors aren't as thick as SRTs, but they're discs. To be safe, I'd also get the backing plates.
Get some stainless steel braided lines since you don't know what kind of shape the donor vehicle is in, and also use your spindles and bearings that are in your rear drums now. Also make sure to adjust your parking brake cable twice before you put your center console back in. I had to readjust mine recently when I felt my rear brakes dragging. You can get new cables from rock auto if they're cut or torn. Have the rotors resurfaced and get new brake pads. If you change your pads yourself, you could use the old pads and change them at a later time.

Okay well I'm going to do it, I'll let you know how everything goes.
You can adjust the parking brake cable on disc huh? Because I know you can't adjust drum e-brake cables.

Good point. Some people don't know that a rear disc setup has drums inside the top hat of the rotor. Rear discs have shoes too! They work like drum brakes inside the rotor.SlvrACR wrote:Ive done it before and its easy. On drum brakes whenyou adjust them you are also adjusting the ebrake. The drum is both. On disk the ebrake shoes are inside the rotor and can also be adjusted.

Either way you adjust the ebrake from the backing plate... not sure why he said to adjust them with the console out? I just swapped 1gn rear discs on my car yesterday. I used the 1gn backing plates, dust shields, brake lines, banjo bolts (1gn and 2gn are different threads), rotors, calipers, ebrake pads, ebrake cables, got new brake pads, and 1 new ebrake cable from rockauto as one was destroyed. It worked without a hitch other than one banjo bolt leaking. I'll get it fixed tomorrow though. Not a big deal.
PM me for your 03+ PCM SKIM/VIN flashing needs. Neon PCMs Plus
ive read that ebrake cables are needed from a the same year or the 00+ neon for this is that true? also the spindles are not needed? and so the list of stuff needed is the:
Backing plates
Dust shields
brake lines(upgraded if possible)
banjo bolts
rotors
calipers
pads(ebrake and regular brake)
ebrake cables
thanks wanna get this done.

you need
knuckles
hubs
rotors
calipers
brake lines
e brake lines
all bolts holding it on
basically un do the two bolts holding the knuckle to the strut
then the brake line
then the tension strut
then the control arms
then un hook the e brake cable from inside the car
then pull the lines out from inside the car.
you may or may not have to drop the tank to pull the e brake lines out

ok cool thanks and the knuckle from the 1gn will fit on a 2gn right just make sure i pull the e brake lines from a 4 door so the reach all the way to the calipers right?

the e brake question, i don't know. iirc, the cars are the same length, but it's probably a good idea to use the 4 door ones. there are a pair at the junk yard here actually....
