great deal but...

Doing a SRT-4 Motor swap into your Neon, maybe even a 2.4... have questions about it, what you'll need or what issues you'll run into? Answers can be found in here.

great deal but...

Post by w0158981 » Mon Aug 24, 2009 6:55 pm

ok so i have stumbled apon a very good deal for a low km srt-4 motor turbo, intercooler all the swap stuff. only thing is it's without a transmission. anyway i was hoping to bolt it up to my 3speed, but i'm wondering what is needed to do this? i'd only want to run the motor at is very base ammount of boost. So i'm just curious as to what parts are going to be needed if i decide to grab this motor?

Snag it anyway, and sit on it. When the funds come for the trans, find one and do it all at once. You'll be glad later that you did it.

This. Especially if it's a deal. T850's are cheap...

If you're not going to go crazy with horsepower, a regular Neon T350 will work just fine. There are quite a few people that are pushing more power than a stock SRT-4 through them. Naturally, there are many more T350's around than T850's.

Someone confirm this for me: I thought the T850 had an inherent 3rd gear problem that the T350's don't have.

The ATX would live, as long as you didn't thrash on it. It will bolt up.

Now I am not 100% sure if the flex plate is the same, but the 3 speed has been mated to the 2.4.

If you get some internals from a 2.2 turbo atx, it would be happier.
(If the internals are interchangeable. They are both A413 ATX's but that doesn't mean too much. The 41te has gone through a few revisions, making swapping some parts near impossible.)

But eventually without some cash put into it, it is going to fail. So, the question is, do you just wait until an MTX comes along, or test the ATX, and hope it lasts until you get a T350, or an 850. Personally, I would go with a T350, since you are ahead of the game weightwise, and they have been proven to hold up to boosted motors.

The 3-spd would bolt right up. Honestly, though...I'd snag that engine and then start the search for a T850. Unless you are hell bent on running the ATX.
