Difference between 2 gauges

Post by DRNeon » Fri Aug 28, 2009 6:20 pm

Hi guys:

Im sort of a neon noob, lol.

I want to know the big diffrecen between a wide band and a narrow band air/fuel gauge. If i install a map clamp should i go with the wide band?. I heard that the narrow only read 0 - 1v and the wide 0 - 5v? what does this means?.

Thanks

Lol, sorry for my bad english , xD

Well you're halfway there.
Narrow being 0 to 1 volt scale, or band. And Wide being 0 to 5 volt scale. The wider or bigger scale allows for a much better idea of what the o2 content is, ie: the air/fuel ratio. (Provided the cylinders are firing correctly.) You cannot really get an accurate tune with a narrow band sensor, as there isn't enough "resolution" to see what is truely going on.

The meter basically converts the o2 content into an air/fuel ratio readout.

That's my stab at it, if there is a better explanation, feel free to improve on it.

Do you have an SRT? I'm somewhat willing to go out on a limb and say unless you're messing with your AFR's there's no reason to have a wideband on your N/a. Even if you could see them, nothing you could do to change it

A narrowband is a switching signal, like binary. On and off. If it's stoich, it will be on the same amount of time that it's off, oscillating back and forth. So you really have 3 readings. Rich, stoich, or lean. Not how much any direction. A wideband is a varying 0-5v signal, same as a map sensor or a temp sensor. So the resolution can be as good as the frequency to voltage converters allow on either side. Most widebands are accurate to .1, so you have a resolution of around 100 instead of 3.
