Flying Tip

Post by racer12306 » Mon Aug 31, 2009 6:29 pm

I'd be surprised if anyone here flys as much as I do, but I'm looking for a tip:

I've been meaning to ask a pilot or flight attendant, but keep on forgetting. My nose tends to get all clogged up while flying. It's not a cold, its just during the flight and for a few hours, or days depending on how many flights I'm on in one day.

Any suggestions for preventing this?

Do you smoke? If yes, I suggest Mucinex(sp?). When I used to smoke I was always congested, and it was even worse when I flew, but I started taking Mucinex and my breathing got 100% better and probably 500% better now that I quit smoking.

I do not smoke, but I've contemplated something like Mucinex.

I found that holding my nose closed and then blowing really hard (yeah, yeah, yeah that's what she said) helped a lot.

What do you do to pass time for the long flights?

take a 3 1/2 to SF this week

My nose does not get clogged... but I do have ear issues during flights.

I have found the best when that happens is to hold my nose closed with my fingers and pretend I'm blowing my nose... it works quite well.

^ I also only get the ear issues, but chewing gum during takeoff helps me out.

Sleep, listen to my iPod (music or audiobooks) and read magizines (books put me to sleep)

I think everyone has the ear problems. It's due to the cabin pressurization.

As a pilot I would suggest keeping your mouth open (or whichever method equalizes the pressure for you) as much as possible to keep your equilibrium inside your head. You may look retarded but the pressure build up in your head can clog your sinus cavities because it wont allow the "fluid" to properly flow and ultimately stuff your nose.

If it stays clogged after you land I'm not sure the above method will do any good. I don't have the clogging issue everyday otherwise flying for me would be a chore, but I have flown with a sinus infection and I can say that is hell. I kept my mouth open to equalize the pressure in my head and it helped a little bit but nothing substantial.

You got me interested so I did a quick search and came up with this so far. I've also read that staying hydrated helps as well.

My nose get the same situation especially during the hell-like 16 hours flying. I used to press the bone on the side of the nose (when you touch your nose and feel the bone in the very front, the points are just on the sides of it and close to face, those happen to be some acupuncture point that can make the blood flowing faster and unclog the nose) and that works for me. But ear issue is more severe.
