Evo RS, Lexus IS250___________I still prefer my neon

Post by Donkeypuncher » Tue Sep 01, 2009 7:23 am

My car has been out of commission for the last week, I had bad wheel bearing, axle, and an exhaust leak. I've been slowly pulling parts and waiting for parts to arrive so I've had to drive my mother and my brothers car for the week.

My brother has an 03 evo RS, I think it has been flashed with a few bolt-ons. My mother has an IS250, she put 5k miles on the car in 3 years so it's relatively new.

After driving both for an extended period of time, I miss my neon more than ever. I will admit the evo is retarded fast, I was kind of scared to really push the car because it's so raw. I believe it ran a 13.1 at the track, and that was the 1st and only pass it ever saw so I'm sure it could break into the 12's with a good launch.

I thought that I would hate my car after driving these cars, but it makes me want to drive my car more. There is something about squeezing every little bit out of a slow car that is so much more gratifying.

Not saying these cars suck at all, quite the contrary, they are nice cars that drive beautifully. I just don't feel the same satisfaction that I get from driving the piss out of my neon.

I was bored so I thought I'd share my thoughts, what is the off-topic forum for anyway?

When I say raw, I mean it's like a track car. The RS has no sound deadening, stereo, speakers, power locks or windows, although it does have A/C. It's pretty much a stripped MR, it has an aluminum roof, hood, and fenders. It also has the helical differential from the MR, it just doesn't have the 6 speed.

Not sure why you laugh about a basically stock daily driver car running 13.1 at the track, that's fast considering he didn't even launch hard in 1st. There are very few cars that can pull those times in stock form, let alone under $25k.

I've driven my buddies Subaru STi that went 12.70's in the 1/4, the AWD launch was SICK. I built boost in it (stab and let off) and dumped it at 5K. It spun all 4 tires with me and the passenger in it. It handled awesome, it was fun to drive, it CRUSHED my neon at the time.

And still for some reason, like my 98 neon better. It could be the fact that it runs a 13.5, when stock it went 16.0? Sure, it doesn't look as good, it doesn't sound as good, it's not as fast in a straight, it's got sloppier handling, but it's just more fun to me. Plus, it gets slightly better gas mileage, I know how to fix everything on it, and the insurance is cheaper. Plus, it's paid off.

Who knows, there are a handful of us that are this weird. Me and my friend drove to CT over the weekend so he could buy a 94 3.3 V-6 caravan he's going to drag race, and potentially boost.

Sure, all out, stock for stock evo>neon. However, built > bought.

Couldn't have said it better myself. There is a sense of satisfaction when you make a slow economy car handle and perform like a $30k car.

Plus it's not fun to race anyone in the evo. Ricers know better than to try it, and the V8's don't want to get embarrassed by a little 4 banger. I did a 4.5k rpm launch today and now I know why awd cars get those 60' times. The evo has a staging setting in the ecu that limits it at 4.5k so I couldn't launch any harder, not that I would really want to.

I'm not dissing either one of these cars by the way, they are a joy to drive and the evo is stupid fast. We have to sell the evo since my brother moved to new york, so I drive it every few days so it doesn't just sit in front of the house.

I guess I'm lucky to be able to drive either car, both are way out of my price range. I have to agree, the is250 handles very well in the corners. I still prefer my mom's old 323 convertible sport model, that was the only car that made me wish it was mine.

The evo is for sale for $11k if anyone is interested, although my friend called first dibs on it.

I wouldn't mind having my neon back...I love the color and it was a fun car to drive...I love the turbo feel.

I wouldn't give up my Challenger but I would take the SRT-4 as my second vehicle

Haha. I'd take the ACR back but, the urge to drive it would not even exist with the STI around...

I would have an Evo RS over nearly ANY Neon. I love my Neons and have for nearly 10 years now but it's time for me to move on to something else. I love them for what they are but a stock Evo is still such a fun, raw car. The IS250 is a great car for what it is as well but it's hardly "fun" either. My SXT does what it does well enough. It's nothing at all to brag about but if I had time in something else that was far more luxo or far more fun to drive, I don't think I would want my car back.
