Need a little help on fixin up the r/t

Post by 01WhiteNe0n » Wed Sep 02, 2009 7:42 pm

First off i been needing tires badly. now the stock size is 195/50/16.. what tires can i put on that besides these ? can i put 195/55? im not really sure. the car is the new 01 r/t i bought.

Second off i have a squeal and its cominng from what i think is the ac compressor and its pissing me off and stops when you hit it with wd40.. whats the easiest way to go around it.. with a delete kit it costs how much? and you cant just rip it out ? because the both serpentine belts go around it ?

Hope it all makes sense thanks for the help guys.

With tires, everyone likes a different tire. I prefer goodyears especially since they came on the neon from the factory. Anyplace you get them should rotate them for free anytime you want. My place does.

The squeal happens when you turn the a/c on doesn't it? See if you can tighten that belt.
Sometimes mine chirps if i hit a puddle and get some water in there...

205/60 R15 fits nicely with a drop.

There is only one belt that drives the A/C and power steering. The other drives the alternator. What are you spraying? The compressor clutch, the belt, or the idler pulley on the tensioner?
(Which cannot be tightened BTW. It is spring loaded.) You need a 17mm wrench to move the tensioner to remove the belt.

My bad, I meant 16's :tardbang:

205/50 16 is what I have. They are actually closer to the 185/65 14 diameter than the 195/50 16

I have a brand new set of 205/50R16 Fusion HRi tires on my R/T. IMO that's the best size tire for a stock 16" Neon wheel. You can see the tires in my pic thread here.

A new accessory belt will likely cure the squeaking.

Thats what i dont understand i blew both of the serpentine belts off at once lol and replaced both of them that night and both are tight. I sprayed down to see if it would stop I sprayed it on the very outside part of the ac pulley "the part you can see from up top" And it stops.
It squeels all the time and changes tone when you turn on the ac so that why im pretty sure its the ac.
As for tires my two back are kumho ecsta all 195/50/16 but places have been telling me its an oddball size and not very common. the 50 part anyway.
I need to get two front tires good for the winter but i might just opt out and get all 4 just because.
Thanks for the responces.

if you intsalled new belts, the belts will some what streatch after they are broken in and need to be re-tightened.

The alternator belt could be. And it might be the cause, since more amps are needed while the A/C is running. The idler, or tensioner arm may be worn, and out of alignment also. It doesn't take much to cause crickets under the hood.

Can you tighten the serpentine belt.. the one that runs around the ac and idler and what not? I know you pull on the 17mm and put it on.. but is it adjustable.
I know the alternator belt is adjustable... and that is tight.
I cant figure it out.

No, it is self adjusting. The spring is the tensioner. If that pivot is worn, or the pulley, it can let the pulley surface be out of alignment with the belt. That will cause the belt, or pulley to make noise. Not saying that is the problem, just a possibility.

Just grab your 17mm wrench, and while it is making the noise, CAREFULLY take the tension off the PS/ air conditioner belt. If the A/C is running, it will still place the same load on the alternator. The compressor clutch will still hold, and the fan will still run for a bit. That will eliminate or confirm the alternator belt. If it stops/gets louder as soon as the tension is eased, it is prolly the belt or the tensioner pully. If it stopes when the compressor slows/stops, then I would look at the compressor. Just make sure the wrench has a good hold. I have done this a few times there was different noises, just to see if it was the timing belt.

Well I took it all apart tonight and confirmed it was definately coming from the ac compressor pulley so I had to undo the alternator and loosen the belt a bit. I then sprayed the insided of the pulley with a silicone lubricant spray and so far driving around all tonight no squeek.
Thanks for the help guys.. Lesson learned: Dont let friends says its ok and not double check it.
