Average oil pressures
Average oil pressures
Just curious to hear from others about your average oil pressures.
When I first start the car I will idle between 50-60 psi.
After driving for about 10 minutes idle pressure is about 30 psi.
After driving for a longer period of time, but with no heavy traffic and maintaining good speeds, I idle around 20 psi.
Cruising anywhere between 30-45 I am between 35-50 psi.
Cruising 50-60 usually around 50 psi.
60+ goes from 50 psi and up.
After driving for a while from point to point, or getting stuck at lights or in traffic I've gone as low as 10 psi, which I can assume is bad. This is the lowest I've ever gotten and at that point managed to get back up to a high speed cruise, so that I could cool down and oil pressure could rise again.
Don't recall any of my WOT pressures.. will have to do a run tonight and check it out.

I have never installed a gauge on mine, so IDK. Throttle position (manifold pressure) should have no direct effect on oil pressure, as the pump relies only on rpm/clearances to build pressure, and the relief valve to regulate max. pressure. Of course temperature, and worn components can negate the need for the relief valve.
As a general rule of thumb, it should be 10 psi for every 1000 rpm. So 10 psi at 700 to 800 rpm is within the acceptable range. (hot)
But being used to Chrysler's higher oil pressure over the years, 10 psi would make me nervous too. (maybe that's why I don't have a gauge) Higher than really needed pressure causes more parasitic drag, which uses more fuel. Thus I wonder how much they have lowered the "norm". My old 2.2 would carry 60 psi at idle. Cold starts hit the peg.

Granted this was in a N/A application, but my pressures were around 55PSI at startup, and go to 20-25PSI at warm idle. During WOT runs (RPM's running from 6.5K to 7.2K) it would sit at 68-72PSI. I typically drove at 75-85mph on the highway and it would sit at right around 62-65PSI normally. Hope that helps you.

It does, but only on the original start, not after it warms up. I usually find my self playing with the idle stop screw pretty often. And 10w40, really? I'll keep that in mind. Thanks man.

Re: Average oil pressures
I'm using a Melling oil pump. I'm not sure if its high volume or not.
Initial startup idle: 55psi
Warm idle: 35psi
2k rpm warm: 50psi
6k rpm warm: 70-80ish I think

I posted a suggestion up on the faq's but nothing yet. I suggested they should have some info like the oil pressure and battery voltage and such. Keep checking there also if they ever make anything out of my suggestion.

I'd go with 10w30 first since it has less VIIs than 5w30 and 10w40.
10w30 should be a little more stable that 5w30 or 10w40.

NO NO NO BAD IDEA! If need be I can dig out an old pic of a cam from a car that aside from using 40wt oil was very well loved, both the cam and the interior surface of the cam towers were galled as if they had been starved for oil(they had not)glasswars wrote:It does, but only on the original start, not after it warms up. The engineers settled on a final 30wt oil for a reason

sorry for the bring back from th dead....
On a stock pump hot at an idle you should be atleast at 20psi at an idle without a turbo. With a turbo installed you are going to lose oil pressure due to the extra demand. If you require thicker than 5-30 on a 2.0 you have got problems. The 2.0 was built pretty tight to run 5-20 stock.....
