Good quality brakes and rotors

Post by Caraudioholic24 » Sun Sep 13, 2009 9:45 pm

Ok I know there is a few topics about this already but I havent had my questions answered yet. In short.... I finally got my Srt-4 rear disc brakes to do the swap on my 05 SXT. Now I was going to get the powerslot rotors and hawk hp street pads all from modern. I got to talking to Crystal (LSP) as she just went through a ton with her rotors so I figured she had a lot of knowledge about what to get. She suggested to me that I get KVR for rotors and Hawkhead pads. She got 100k miles on them and had no problems.

Well i looked into them and they look great but a tad pricey at 110 a rotor. I do like the idea that I can get them cryo treated and the centers Black in color. I dont mind paying for quality as long as I dont have to worry about replacing them all the time. I have heard horror stories about the cross drilled rotors. My problem is that Im going for show and I dont want to deal with the rotors lookin like crap after use with rust and I want a really low "DUST" pad so that Im not having to clean my rims every 5 min. I was also thinking about EBC green stuff but i came across KVR pads as well. (Same company that makes the rotors). SO I wanna hear what everyone else has to say.

My car is an ATX and with the Pro Kit drop, body kit and such I wont be driving her CRAZY and doing 150mph but I do like to cruise around and get on her once in a while. (Cant wait to feel her with all new sway bars LOL) Thanks for all the input ahead of time.

I can vouch for EBC having some great products. I'm using their rotors with redstuff pads. If you're going for low dust make sure to grab some ceramic/kevlar pads rather than organic.

Anyone heard or know where to get hawkhead pads. LSP says they are awesome for dust compared to Hawk HP.

I was thinkin maybe Kvr pads and rotors. Since they make the rotors they must know what the heck they are doing with pads!!!

I also like the EBC REDs they bite extremely hard!!

I have also had decent luck with Pro-Ceramics from advanced auto parts, i wouldn't use them in autox but there is very little dust with them.

regardless of the dust I am definitely going to get the EBC REDs again

What rotors were you using the EBC Reds on? I like having good bite!! I am thinking of going with Powerslot rotors and something like those EBC's for auto-x next year, anyone run that set up?

The problem I have with the power slots is they look like crap after short period of time. They get rusty really fast. Thats why I like the KVRs. I can get them color matched and cryo treated so they dont look like crap.

Where do you get the KVR's? I have seen the Powerslots all over the place. Also where do you get the EBC pads from?

if you want better braking performance, swap the master cylinder as well, and leave the rear solid rotors. I'm running hawk HPS pads and they are extremely low dust if any at all. Although, i'm easy on the brakes.

Since you said yours is a show car, get cheap drilled and slotted ebay rotors, then do a big brake swap up front, but you'll need an srt-4 steering rack...

Why do you need the SRT rack for big brakes? I would think it is a shorter ratio anyways and it would be good for performance to do this but I just can't figure out why you would need to do it with bigger brakes.

No way will I ever go and get Crappy ebay rotors. LOL As I mentioned before I want something thats gonna last and perform well.

I think there are plenty on here who have done just the rear swap and have had no problem with the stock master cylinder but if it is true that putting in a better master cylinder will help I may consider.

ANY info on the above mentioned would be great. Thanks

i actually did the rear disc swap this year as winter came rolling in. I upgraded the master as a precaution plus it is not that expensive for what you get. All i can say i thank god i put the new master in cuz i was able to "manual ABS" like never before and the snow was never a problem stopping cuz i could tap the brakes repeatedly so easily.

STOCK STOCK STOCK STOCK STOCK

You are on street tires right? The $23 duralast pads from autozone will lock up just about any street tire and the deal with heat pretty well. Stock rotors are fine as well. Get some decent fluid and braided lines you will be fine

He wants an aftermarket look tho, since he has a show car.

But, i do agree with the Duralast pads. I took em to NHIS and they worked great tho, they did harden and squeak afterwords.

If you're going for show EBC has 2 rotor types, slotted and slotted dimpled. Both are black zinc plated so they should look good for a while. They sell them in pairs, the slotted dimpled ones are like $154 from Summit racing. They should be good quality, they're made from British castings in the USA or UK not China.

IIRC, there is a thread that has that info.

But how about for auto-xing? I have had the stock set up in my car overheat just driving aggressively on the twisties so I was thinking a better rotor with better pads may help with this when I am auto-xing? Personally I am thinking cross drilled to actually let some of the heat leave the rotor.

i've stayed away from drilled rotors because of the higher risk of warping. I would def. recommend the power slots with the EBC pads. the pads are designed for a track/street combo so they should be fine.

Stock or SRT/PT brakes? Honestly either way you should be fine with the duralast pads and high quality solid face rotors. If you are overheating the brakes in an auto-x situation or a brief run through the twisties work on your braking technique.
