ALMOST KILLED IT!

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

ALMOST KILLED IT!

Post by Kezzo123 » Tue Sep 15, 2009 2:37 pm

I pulled onto the drive for some much needed wire brushing and unsealing before winter and coolent started pouring out!
Image

I got it on ramps and notice the coolent was coming out of the lower radiator hose. I fiddled for a bit and found the clip had done this!
Image

Luckly i only lost about a litre of coolent so istuck a jubilee clip on and topped it up!

Im so glad this didnt happen on the motorway!!

BTW sorry for crappy phone pics...

It prolly had a nick or scrape on it, and eventually it failed. Sharp edges can cause stress risers. Hence why the FSM warns against drilling anywhere on the strut tower: So the spring does not get nicked by the drill. Once that happens, it is only a matter of time before the spring breaks.

Patience, of course, is a very powerful weapon, but sometimes I start to regret that it is not a firearm.
Too much time spent here is a sign of a bad case of Ownaneonvirus.

And when you add in road salt the metal deteriorates 10x faster. That lower hose is a bad spot to leak, you don't notice until the temp gauge pegs out unless you can smell the coolant.
