Air conditioning lines/pipes frozen

Post by speedracer » Mon Sep 21, 2009 11:16 am

My care had been making some funny noises for about a week. Today after I got to work I looked under the hood while it was idling and foung all of the metal pipes from my ac were frozen with like a quarter to half inch of ice. Even metal canister against the firewall was frozen up. Wtf? Do I have a leak? Suggestions please, thanks. Paul.

If it is humid, that may be normal. As long as it is blowing cold air it is prolly fine. Frost on the low pressure side is a good thing, but it might be a sign of other problems.
If it is not blowing cold, then the expansion valve (If they still use them) might be clogged, letting the lines before it have full suction from the compressor.
Refrigerant temperature is directly related to the pressure on it. The lower the pressure the colder it gets. If it gets too much suction, then it may ice up the evaporator coil in the car, and not let air through. So if the air flow seems weak, there could be a problem.
The only way to really know is to have it checked by someone with the proper tools.

there's many things it could be besides the TXV. and i'm not positive if our cars have one. it might be an orifice tube setup. either way, don't worry about it unless you stop blowin cold air. THEN dive into what the problem might be

Cool, it was raining and humid this morning plus the vents were blowing cold air.
