Post by Blue02 » Fri Sep 25, 2009 7:18 pm

So i was pulling into NAPA this morning and the car just quits, dead stop, but still turns over like crazy but wont start come to figure out my timing belt broke so what i would like to know is whats gonna have to be replaced im thinking only the valves and the timeing belt and probly go ahead with the water pump but the timeing belt breaking wouldnt destroy the head would it? any info would be highly appriciated.

It all depends on where the valves were when it broke. Sometimes it will just tweak a valve, and other times if the valve was full open, you may need a piston/head. There is no way of knowing which end of the spectrum it is until the head is pulled. Expect the worst, and hope for the best.

Once the damage is determined, then buy parts. A water pump is pretty much a mandatory replacement. It is what causes the belt failure sometimes.
If the head/bottom end is salvageable, then you will also need: new head bolts, gasket, cam seals, intake and exhaust gaskets. Valve cover gasket/tube seals may also need replaced.

It is almost a given that some valves at the minimum will need replaced. A full valve job/guides would be recommended, or for about $100 to $200 more a new Mag. head from mancini and new valves.

Time to pull it apart and see whats going on. Can't tell without doing that. It sucks, but it is what it is.

Good luck! That's how I learned. Check out my progress log if you need some reference pics, I have quite a few in there from my first rebuild.
