Tinting tails?

Post by Project Draven » Mon Oct 10, 2005 11:38 am

I have seen some nice work on the tail light tint jobs.
I wanna tint mine, I picked up a can of the Night shade spray tint and tested it on another car. With the reverse lights came on, it would shine a god aweful red. I see some out there that dont do that. Anyone have suggestions? Or a How to?

I don't know about where you live, but here your tail lights have to show red. If you mess up, I think laquer(sp) thinner will fix your problem.

I live in Pa, and ours have to be red as well. I dont want to make them completely black, just make them darker.

It shined through as a red color? And it's black Night Shades, right? :) Stupid question, I know, but hey...

They make a huge difference. without it it is really an ugly flat black color but after the clear it looks real good.

my question is how bright the lights are after doing this..
People can barely see my brake lights now with my altezza's during the day, what about with this mod?

I'm willing to gamble if they can barely see them now, they won't see them when you spray tint them... Bad idea. It's nice to know when someone's braking. ;)

 i remember that w/ those lights  my new black ones are a bit brighter. i thought about tinting mine too, and the ones that you have, but i was afraid fo someone not paying attention since they arent too bright and rear ending me

oh thanks chic
I tried LEDS and even silverstars, and I have yet to find a upgrade for my altezza's so people can see me. Let alone trying to shade them...

LEDs work cause they are more concentrated and brighter but any aftermarket lights are going to be somewhat more dim during the day time. Never had any problems with them.

is it the clear lenses on the altezzas that are causing the visibility problems?... i just have the covers from modern.. and only minimal loss of light... completely blacked out during the day, but still no vis problems when you hit the brakes..

drivers side with cover on, passenger side off..

1st one lights on
2nd brakes on

If you spray it just right, Nightshades will dry smooth and shiny as glass. My side markers and reverse lights came out perfect. I don't have any close-ups, however.

for best results, drink plenty of beer and spray thin coats. my lights are nice and dark but still have max visibility during day and night. and a tip for you, hit them up with some spray wax.

i was actually following my car yesterday... and the lights are very noticeable... in the daylight i run with the parking lights on (fog lights are on that way) and you could barely notice that the taillights were also on, but when the brake or turn signal was applied, it was very noticeable... so i know they are bright enough at night time also.

okay, so after doing my udp, i decided to redo my tails. i sprayed some paint remover from an aerosol can over one of the taillights to remove the nightshades coats.

my damn luck, that paint remover was so strong it started to eat through the plastic cover. i spent about an hour just sanding that damn thing down so it would be smooth again. the other light, i just wet sanded a little bit... then resprayed the nightshades and followed with a bunch of clear.... looks awsome with the clear coat on, big difference from before.

I tinted mine from the inside seperating the lens from the taillight housing with a heat gun. It takes more time and you have to be super careful but it looks soo much better when your done also retaining the smooth shinny finish. When you do it from the out side you can usually see scratches from sanding/smoothing that I didn't want. I also did mine a little diffrent and left the lower ribbed center section untinted. The visibility is just as good as stock.
