fixing a hole in carbon fiber

Got a question on outside appearance modifications. Questions about body kits, exterior lighting, just anything thats a visual mod on the "exterior" of the car. Ask those questions here.

fixing a hole in carbon fiber

Post by fearingdark » Thu Oct 01, 2009 1:38 am

ok, so when i got my cf hood, it had 2 sets of holes in it for pins. one in the cf and one in the fg skeleton. and there is about an inch between the two layers. now i want to fix the holes.

my idea was to take some Great Stuff expanding polyurethane foam and fill the cavity between the cf and fg. then sand it down a bit, place a small sheet of fg cloth under the cf layer and then build it up flush with the cf.

lather rinse repeat for the fg skeleton side.

then prep, sand, paint for the outer edges of the hood and some red candy/clear for the middle section.

basically my question is, does this sound like it will work? and do you think the great stuff will withstand the resin/hardener combo?

any tips/suggestions other than this

thanks

While great stuff is strong I think the resin will eat right through it.

what do you think would work best then?

maybe soaking a piece of fg cloth in resin and putting it against the cf layer from the inside and set the hood upside down till it hardens? then basically the same for the fg side?

Honestly, it probably will never look right or match the rest of the weave. I would trade it with someone who wants pins, or just leave the pins.

i'm not trying to match the weave. just trying to patch the holes and paint everything except the "bump" of the srt scoop

If you're doing that than any repair will do. As long as you can get it to adhere to the back of each part of the hood, the CF and the skeleton.
