Nothing should be done to the oil pump unless it does not work anymore..

You could say the same about the waterpump, too. But I wouldn't recommend leaving it in.

I wouldn't say the oil pump is as critical/prone to failure, but it is more of, since you went through the trouble, and expense (if you don't do your own work) of having the engine torn down to that point, if you have the extra $ putting a new pump in is good insurance. And if you have a shop do the work, the labor savings of not doing it over, will pay for the pump. ;)

:withstupid: If your already there, might as well save your self the money and headaches in the future. Plus isn't it true that you run a risk when re-using a timing belt? So you would have to purchase a new timing belt as well when you replace the oil pump if it goes.

The 8 years I've been working for Chrysler I have never seen them do an oil pump. Granted while your in there it is cheap insurance, but typically on a SOHC motor we do Timing belt, Water pump, Tensioner....

Just did all that plus a headgasket last winter, hopefully she holds up this spring and summer still. But now she's currently off the road till I flush the radiator, get new coolant lines and a new cat. :(

My dealer has many customers with 200,000 mile neons. The key is good maintenance. My SRT-4 has 130,000 miles and is still going strong.

The only thing aggravating me now is that it's burning oil quite fast, I don't see any leaks though.

Mine's coming up on 104k and burns oil like a mofo.

Also, recently, when I floor it for a little, the rpms will shoot up about 1g and the car will quickly go up about 10 mphs in a fraction of a second, then the rpms drop down to where they were, even though I'm still flooring it.

I have never had any major problems with the Neon, but damn these cars act weird sometimes as they age.

Damn, that sucks. Besides some minor stuff my, 2000 has never acted weird mechanically or left me stranded... yet <3 . I just got a feeling the engine is gonna have to be torn apart again to fix the oil burning issue so I don't have to carry some in the car incase of an emergency, lol.

Are you sure it's not just dumping it into the intake manifold?
