I'm betting more than half the non-magnum neons are auto. Then you have people like us that snatch up all the manuals and keep them for years. Then you figure in all the wrecked manuals in the junk yard. People are also buying cheap used cars nowadays.
That leaves a small number left out there, most of which are in dirty ghetto lots and in bad condition.

I have two MTXs now. However, the Dark Jewel started life as an ATX many moons ago.

I love my ATX even if the cooling system went stuipd last week.
I wanted it with the ATX. I drive 50 or so miles one way to work. I work in DC and live in baltimore on the north side. Avg speed on the way home can range from 10 to 30 mph on the interstate and can take up 3hrs to get home.
Non rush hour banging 70 all the way and home in 55 mins
If I was within 30mins of home in rush hour and not in DC at all I'd go MTX.
I used to my 89 GMC 1500 with 5speed in DC when I first started down there and it was a killer on both my leg and clutch. Sometimes between lights you only go 1 to 2 car lenghts.

All 4 of my Neons are MTX.
My son had a '99 Sport Sedan ATX, but it was totaled when a lady pulled out in front of him.

I think most of us are mtx only kind of people, I know I could never own an atx.
Personally, I believe the atx is very dangerous. It gives people a false sense of security and they don't pay attention to the road and cars around them. I see people eating, texting, doing makeup, and even reading a book because they have an atx. Don't even get me started about tiny women driving big trucks.

Considering 8 out of 9 normal neons were ATX, they win in sheer amount of neons on the road. Most of the r/t's are MTX but I have worked on a very few ATX ones at work. Of course all SRT-4's and ACR's are MTX stock.
They ATX never win in a race unless worked over with Steve Locketts modifications. BTW he has almost perfected the 4 speed auto for high power drag racing. So far it can hold over 1000 ftlbs in 1st., He just has to finish up some programming on the mega shift boards to really make these scream.
Both my neons have MTX. Mine has a 1st gens challenge cars case and guts (.81 5th)with a 4.12 FD out of a european 1.8l PT cruiser with quaife and a few other mods.
My wifes is a 3.94, .72 5th with a phantom grip(load o crap diff!).

I have worked on one for sure. It had the full mag head/IM/header setup. But a 4 speed auto, I thought it was weird as all hell. The guy told me he ordered the car that way when he got it new off the lot.

Lets see first neon was a MTX SXT. bought it that way. I think it was the only one the lot had. Second neon was a 96 ACR so of course MTX. Third was an ATX nto cause i wanted it to be but its just came that way. Fourth if i end up with it is an ATX but will not stay that way. of the many, many differant cars i have owned 90% where sticks. even my audi is an MTX.
