Has anyone ever considered a Toyota Prius motor swap?
I mean I know that's somthing no one would want to do, its like tearing away your cars masculinity. But if you commuting long miles daily. I mean it would generally be cheeper? But do you guys think it would work?

Why would you even consider doing such a thing?! If you want the Prius MPG and un-environmentally friendly style, why not just get a Prius?

Well with enough time and money, anything is possible. lol. Really though. There are so many things different about hybrid drivetrains, you'd be better off welding the neon cabin onto the prius chassis.
For better mileage, you'd probably want to go for the 1.6 export motor swap, throw on an underdrive pulley, keep your 3.55 trans, and run that thing as lean as possible.

You have absolutely how horribly hard that swap will be. There are battery packs in the back of the car that equal ~280Vdc, which there is no room for in a Neon.
I wouldn't even begin to fathom the complexity of swaping the electronics.
It would be cheaper to buy a Prius.
I don't suggest the Prius, it's small, it's slow and it's not that impressive IMO.
If I were to go for a newer vehicle strictly for mileage, I would go with the last generation TDI Jetta (not the pump deuche engine) but I sure as hell wouldn't try to swap it into a Neon.

It would be more economical to swap an MTX in, if you have an ATX. Assuming by long miles, it is hwy. I can get 40 mpg hwy if I watch my speed. So the savings in fuel to buy a hybrid just aren't there. It would prolly need another battery pack, by the time it came near paying for it's self in fuel savings. So there's another what, $5000 ?
Hybrids generally, are more suited for city use anyhow, as thats where they use the electric part more.
Dropping in the 1.8 may, or may not get you better mileage. Smaller engines have to work harder. IIRC the gearing was lower in those too. So with the 3.55 ratio, it may never get into the right rpm range to be efficient.
Take the Dakota as a prime example. with the 2.5, my Dad's first one got, on a good day about 19 mpg. The next one was a 3.9 V6, which got 23 mpg. Both 5 speeds. Both mainly hwy miles.

Says the guy with hybrid in his name.
Yeah, I know the meaning has a totally different twist. Couldn't help myself.

Actually my MPG just tanked by putting new tires on the car that are 2 lbs heavier each than OEM.
My Prius is not suited for city driving, unless you want people to ride your ass, honk and get pissed at you for going extremely slow to keep it running on the electric motor rather than switching to the gas engine.
I've got 40+ multiple times in my Neon as well.

not to bring this back from the dead but what about just driving a beer can of a neon with a 3.55 with the weak 5 gear. youd be garunteed 50+ mpgs then, just never expect to go fast.lol.
00 neon gonna be fast one day with a atx.

My 98 ran mid 15's, got 39MPG daily, and 45MPG on long trips. 50MPG is easily doable, there is someone on .org doing it. I'm sure I could have done better on the highway, but I was cruising at 65MPH.neontj wrote:not to bring this back from the dead but what about just driving a beer can of a neon with a 3.55 with the weak 5 gear. youd be garunteed 50+ mpgs then, just never expect to go fast.lol.
Drive slower, gas mileage goes up, it's common sense.

So many neons so little time.

I would say crispy, but it is prolly a pile of rust now. Or a cube.
Edit: Wait, it has transformed into a bitchin' toaster!
