01 Neon error code

Post by dreamersrevenge » Mon Oct 12, 2009 3:33 pm

I checked the sticky, but it's 03+ so I'm not sure if they still apply to my car or not. I'm getting a P1684 and P0551 code. So.... What are they, how do I fix the issues? (well, what parts need replaced)

about 7 lines up from your post is the error codes. ( viewtopic.php?t=11307 )

As for what needs to be fixed... search the site when you find out what it is.

the p0551 is the power steering pressure switch that tells the car to rev up when making tight turns such as in palleral parking.

I had to replace mine after 150,xxx miles dealer part was like $38.00 and tax

P1684 is "battery disconnected within last 50 starts".

I had the same code today when I got a P0302. (I repl the battery recently)
Replaced plugs (62k mi on EOM) and all is well. Did plug wires too btw.
from here

I've replaced the plugs but not the wires... As for the battery being disconnected in the last 50 starts, never has since I've owned the car (well over a year now). Kinda confusing... maybe need new plugwires?

Hmm.. that would explain the sudden "funky" steering problem I've been having with it, but it's never threw a code til today. Got a partnumber for that switch? If not I'll stop by the dealer next week. I may look into getting a new oxygen sensor too, since I've never changed and that might be causing the crap mileage I've been getting. That's a whole 'nother thread right there though...

The 1684 code never goes away on some cars.
Sometimes it can mean a battery is about to die.
It has prolly been there all along.
It will not set the CEL.
The plug wires have nothing to do with it.

The PS switch is what set the CEL. What steering problem do you have?
The switch will not cause too much of an issue. Unless the engine stalls during parking, it is not the cause of your troubles.

Ok.. wasn't sure about the battery code. As far as the steering problem it's somewhat difficult to explain, and I'm not really sure if it's just me or the car is actually doing this. Ever since I had the rear brakes replaced I noticed the steering was easier... not really sloppy loose, but I guess lighter maybe? Sounds pretty dumb I know and I think it's just coincidence that it started doing that around the same time the back brakes were replaced. As for stalling during parking it did do that quite a bit the past month or so when I had to run the A/C, but I'm assuming it was because the compressor was running. It primarily did it when I started it up and let it idle before putting it in gear. I haven't had much problem once I stopped running it all of the time though.

You can reset you cpu and see if the 0551 goes away sometime the system will hiccup if your low on fuild. May want to look for leaks in the lines as well. but for me it was the sensor. Not sure the part number anymore.

The 02 sensor on the exhaust manny you can get from just about anywhere. The one thats in the cat I had to go to the dealer for because of how short it was. But if you think the 02 is bad may want to think about replacing the cat as well. Bought one from modren and it works real nice. i had a high flow before its last one and it went dead fast.

I'll have to check the fluid... it was ok the last time I checked, but you know how that goes... If I replace the cat I'll more than likely put a stock one back on it, same for the oxygen sensors. There's two of them right? One before and one after the cat? That'll have to wait awhile though, I bought the parts to turn the soon-to-be v8 astro into a 5speed, so yeah... that'll have to wait.

My impression is that it's like the old #12 code--it tells you it's the beginning of the code sequence, not that there's necessarily anything wrong with your battery.
Fix it 'till it's broken. Then upgrade.
