our year old car needs rear brakes!!!

Post by ratchet » Tue Oct 13, 2009 9:46 am

Last june we got a 2008 Honda Accord Ex, our first honda. Me having 2 kids and wife, wanted something safe, so this seemed like a good safe car. Well took the car in last month for a 15k mile service, my tech said i will need new rear brakes, they are 4 bonded! WOW 15k miles an we already need NEW BRAKES! So as of now they are not recalling the 08 Accords, and there seem sto be alot of people pissed off about this. My 00 neon just got rear brakes on 98k miles, lol Sorry had to bi*ch somewhere!

Wow, thats fast. I don't think I have ever heard of rear brakes wearing that fast. Someone screwed up in the design.

Not to detract from the honda thing but your rear brakes on your Neon are drums, right? Those things are suppose to last for a long time.

But yeah, 15K is a little sudden for rears.

My buddy had an 06, at 25000km he needed new rear wheel bearings, hubs, and wheel speed sensors. Don't know about the brakes though.

My sister's 2007 Jetta went through rear pads in ~10,000 miles. I think it was around 9,000. Not a design error according to VW. According to VW, their newer cars have a majority of the braking bias in the rear now so they will wear much faster than the fronts. Das Autobahn. Don't forget the $50 special bit socket you have to buy to work on them, and the gigantic breaker bar you need to break the bolts loose. It took me 3 days I think to change rear pads.

People are pretty pissed about the above too; and add that the rotors are also made of an un-turnable metal. So, you have to buy new rotors everytime too.

Figure $400-$600 (the estimate was somewhere in that range) for a rear brake job every 10,000 miles...

I love my American cars that work "normal" and use "normal" tools.

My wifes Beetle went through rear brakes before front brakes, but it still took 60k or so to wear them out.

The rear brakes on my SRT were toast at around 24,000 miles.

Shit happens sometimes. Maybe the calipers weren't lubed right and they were sticking. Maybe the tech is pulling your wang for more money.

How much can rear brakes for a 2008 Accord be?

About $60 for ceramic pads is my best educated guess. It's a Honda Accord so replacing the rear brakes has to be a driveway affair. Yeah, it sucks but if you get in there and get them fixed and you know they are done right, it's less to worry about.

I love Honda cars. We are actually considering a Pilot or a Ridgeline for our next car (keeping the Neon). They are the highest resale value vehicle on the market. I would love to buy a Certified Ridgeline for $20K and have it be worth $15K after 5 years and 130K miles on the clock. Hell yeah! Hondas can be boring but it's almost an investment. Say that about a $20K Jeep Grand Cherokee with the same mileage.

2008 Chrysler/Dodge caravans are burning up rear brakes at 10-15K. Mostly due to bad rear calipers though....no recall yet....

paid $150 for labor and brakes. NAPA Premium ultra quite pads were $80 (ceramic), but the mechanic said if I was to purchase pads for $125.00 then there would be a $25 mail in rebate. He made a dummy recipt and had the brakes listed for $125.99 and his labor tate which is about 68hr for a total of $210 with tax included on the dummy recipt so I could get the $25 main in rebate. So Ii spent a total of $125 with labor and all. Dont get me wrong Hondas are great cars. I might by my friends 95 prelude si for 3k and it has 150k miles on it and hes the original owner and the car runs great! I was just thinking that rear pads should last longer.
