No high beams

Post by excon » Mon Oct 26, 2009 9:32 am

I have no high beams, but I do have low beams. If i try to use the high beams my lights cut off and I only have the parking lights. I checked the fuse for high beams next to the dash, tested it, and it's fine. Is there another fuse somewhere or something else to check for?

I found through searching that people were having the opposite problem that I am. They would have high beams, but no lows. I also have cluster lights on and all my gauges work. I read that if your MFS goes your cluster lights turn off or something?

Possible MFS, But check in the PDC under the hood. There is a relay and a fuse for the high beams. The low beam fuses are in the car. One for each light. IIRC the highs share the same fuse in the PDC.

I found no High beam fuse in the PDC (under the hood). There was a fuse in the car for high beams as well as the low beams for each light like you said. All fuses in the PDC as well as in the fuses in the car are good.

Is there anything else I can try/look for before I assume my MFS is done?

The mfs is just a component, it has lots of metal contacts and lots of areas that can go bad. I wouldnt rule it out as a possibility. silly question though you did check the bulbs right? iv had both headlights blow at the same time once.

Damn, I could have sworn there was a relay.
:tardbang:
Check fuse 8 in the car. It should have power when the high beams are selected. It is only powered from the MFS. If it does not get power, check fuse 16. If fuse 16 is powered, then I would bet on the MFS. Check with a test light to verify that the fuse is actually sending the power through. A hair line crack will not be visable.

Well, my low beams work just fine. So when I turn my lights on they shine just fine, but when i click it for brights I get NOTHING... except parking lights. Imagine my surprise when I wanted more light and got nothing!

I'll try testing for power tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

Do you know how you can hold the switch just right to have the high beams and low beams on? What happens when you try that, do the low beams at least stay on?

yes. When i pull it back before the click the light comes on for high beams on the dash, but nothing happens to the "light output". I don't get the high beams. I just continue to get the lows.

As soon as it clicks though, I just get parking lamps and nothing else.

So, have you solved this yet?

If the light is on in the dash, the problem is somewhere after the fuses/MFS switch. The highbeam indicator is powered from the same source after the fuses/MFS switch.

I haven't figured it out yet. I checked all the fuses and even tested them to see if they were good. They're all fine.

What would be the next place to check? Wiring? Come to think of it, we had a huge rain storm the night before my high beams stopped working... maybe some water got into something... :-k

As long as i still have low beams.....

Ok, it was the bulbs. After checking everything else I thought what the hell. Changed them out and now the high beams work.... wtf...

really though, how can the same bulbs that give me low beams not work for high beams? We don't have two seperate light systems for low and high beams.

Two separate filaments. I have had one side work with highs and the other not. Glad you found the answer though.
