do-it-yourself headliner?

Post by scneonchic » Sat Oct 15, 2005 5:23 pm

my stock headliner is tan, i want to redo mine in black, nothing special just the same material (or as close to same) as stock, just black.

has anyone done this? if so, can you give me some directions on how i should go about doing it? im sure its quit simple, and if i can do it myself rather than pay someone $70 to do it, i will.

thanks :D

I redid mine black with headliner material identical to OEM.......of course I put the Mopar M in foam, and deleted my dome light too.

Here's a link to the HOW-TO......

http://www.xtremeneons.com/how-tos/customheadliner.html

NOTE: The flash from the camera made the headliner look a little grey in the pic, but it is actually a very nice dark black.

UPDATE: the spray glue I used is NOT GOOD.....after it got hot in the summer it started to sag.....I would recommend something stronger for sure.....

Here is my version of the do-it-yourself headliner. I think I did mine a month or so after Evil....I also used foam for the MOPAR "M" and my material was black tweed. I left my dome light in though.

ok guy's what about this. I bought a second headliner so I wouldn't have to tear mine out while I was redoing mine. The backing on it seems weak and if I try to pull it apart it gets like paper and is very maluable. What can I do to keep this from happening? I also need silver microsuede for this project, but I can't seem to find it, would a furniture upholstery shop be my best bet?

Here's mine experience with the fabric dye...

So much easier than playing with vinly...

Here's a shot of the dye doing its thing...
Image

And here are the materials that was used...
Image

Materials were from Joanns Fabrics... I used 2 bottles of the black dye but gonna go get another to make it darker... Pour the dye in a empty spray bottle to get in teh zone....The foam brushes are used to move the dye around but don't leave them in the same spot cuz they are foam and they will soak up some of the dye.... I did mines outside to let teh sun help me look for spots I missed and teh dry the headliner too.... Other than that it took no more than 20 mins. to do so..

Almost finished product...
Image

So cost for project:
*Another Headliner from the Junk Yard: $50
*Rit Liquid Dye from Joann Fabrics: $3.79 each (bought 2 so far)
*2" Foam Brush Set: .50 each (bought 2)

So total for making my new Tan Headliner Black is $58.58....

This is a very helpful thread. I'll probably be doing mine in the near future (grey to black) because I burned a damn hole in mine with a cigarette, MAN was I pissed!
