Bad Locking Cylinder?

Post by pyistazty » Fri Nov 06, 2009 10:43 am

So, i put the key in the car, and it won't turn, at all, its stuck. I've tried everything and even had my step dad come out and look at it. He thinks its a bad locking cylinder for the ignition. Any advice? Tips? People with a similar problem?

And if that is what it is...How much would that be to replace or fix?

Move the steering wheel left and right while trying to turn the key.

The fix is going to be through the dealer and pretty pricey. My GF had that happen on her car too. When I was looking for solutions, a bunch of people said WD-40 it up. I'd probably use lithium grease though. Just spray some in there and see if it helps.

I also had to punch her key in there to get it moving.

Do you have another key to try? I have one key that I can start the car, then pull it out. Possibly the key it self is worn enough.

I had the same thing happen to me early this year. Put the key in the ignition, then tap on the end of the key with something, like the handle of a screw driver or your hand. That should loosen it up and let you turn it. Mine did that for about a month, then slowly stopped after I sprayed a little wd40 in the lock cylinder.

Hasn't happend again yet so I haven't replaced it. The problem with removing the lock cylinder is you have to turn the key to the "on" position to pull it out of the steering column.

Here's the post from back then: viewtopic.php?t=39399&highlight=key+stuck+ignition

I had a locksmith come out and fix it, it was a problem of dirt, oil, grime, grease, etc, getting stuck in the wafers (what he called them) and it pretty much made the pistons (or w/e you wanna call them) from going back down after the key pushed them up. When he pulled that cylinder out, it was so freaking dirty, and he showed me how they would not go back down. So I got a new one and am over with it. Oh, and he was a big Dodge guy, so i thought that was cool..lol, and his daughter drives a neon as well, shoulda gotten her number, damnit all! lol.

Glad you got it straightened out.

Now, call up the locksmith and ask to speak to his daughter, and invite her to the site!

It's a common problem, I think.
