Muffler Q

Post by pyistazty » Mon Nov 09, 2009 2:40 am

INC Noob-ish question.

Pretty much, I have ricer cannon on the back of my car. I'm rather tired of it, the sound is way too ricey. I'm open to all suggestions, however. I've been told a camaro style muffler is preferable. Does anyone have an example to show me, both to buy and to hear how it sounds?

But, as I said, I am open to all suggestions, I'm just going for a deeper and/or less ricey sound. Thanks for the help and it's good to be back on the forums (I've been gone for awhile, haha).

i have a spiral flow muffler and it sounds real good. its not ricey, not loud and i have one setup with a side exit and a dual exhaust. personaly i dont like the camero type muffler because that sounds ricey to me.

Well, having an entire catback helps. I've got a cannon on mine, and it is nowhere near ricy. Still gives a good growl, deep and toned. No raspiness or weedwacker stuff here, and I credit that on it being an exhaust system, not just a muffler.

Keep the cannon. It makes people think you're a ricer, and that's amusing. Just add a Moroso Spiral-flo muffler inline in the exhaust tunnel. Baby Jesus will smile when you rev your car.

I'd look around for an R/T exhaust, preferably one from 01 or 02.

Walker Quietflow V6 camaro muffler with 12" resonator behind the cat. Sounds like Donkeypuncher's clip, but toned down. Without the resonator, about the same.

My old Apexi N1 catback (w/cannon) was almost silent at idle and was super deep under throttle. No rice to speak of. That muffler is $200+ alone though. You get what you pay for.

I'll go out on a limb and guess that your cannon isn't a quality name brand piece? Problem solved.

Yeah that's an ebay/knock off muffler. They sell for 20-50 bucks. If you want duals, go with SRT + glasspack. If not, pretty much any mid sized muffler can be welded onto your factory piping.

lol, sorry man, though I do believe it was louder when you had the single exit. The r/t tips look much better than the single exit though, so it equals out

I was thinking about using that magnaflow muffler, and only putting it back about 3/4 the way, and get 2 exhaust tips and have it go out the side, in front of my rear wheels...just a thought.

if you are looking for a quieter setup go with magnaflow, nice and quiet, like stock can't hear it inside while cruising along, but nice deep tone when getting on it. and it is a single in and dual exit (sits / looks like srt but the pipes to the tips don't curve down towards the ground as much.

i dont see why people say mufflers are ricey.. i mean dam i run 2 4" tip mufflers with no cat and 2.5" exhaust piping and a cherrybomb.. it sounds mean as hell. maybe its just my set up that doesnt sound ricey..

what makes them sound ricey is just adding a muffler to a stock with stock cat neon exhaust..try getting bigger piping..remove ur cat..and get a good brand name muffler...

when i get my car back next week ill make a video of what it sounds like.

If I can't say anything nice, I'll only say this.

My personal opinion is that the Magnaflow Camaro/Firebird sounds the best. I've heard all sorts of other ones, and they all sound like a retarded lawnmower, besides the one Sean had on his car before it fell off.

My R/T muffler has holes in it, and it sounds like ass.

There are certain setups that just flat out sound good, and some that sound terrible. The camaro mufflers have been proven to sound good so it's always a safe bet to go that route.

Personally I'm a magnaflow fan, so I am kind of biased.

I'm not saying mufflers are ricey. I'm saying my muffler is ricey. It's a cannon, literally lol. I probably wouldn't be as ricey w/o the muffler on it, its just the wat the sound gets projected, and my muffler does this, so i'm getting a new one, most likely magna flow because i like the way your neon sounds, donkey.

Oh and Neon4life, i have no cat, i have an opened up header (ebay ftw), that acme with a down pipe that has the flex pipe thing or w/e it is, then goes straight back to my muffler.

Edit:
I looked up the muffler. That muffler is $171, just ouch.

Most of those ricer mufflers have an artificial sound, I refer to it as a artificial or resonated sound if you will. The straight flow through mufflers like magnaflow give an Unmanipulated sound that really brings out the real sound of our engines.

I will admit that some exhausts sound awesome using resonated mufflers, rsr is probably the best of that group. But for daily driving, magnaflow, flowmaster, and dynomax are your top 3 for sound quality. I still prefer magnaflow due to it's straight through design, less restriction and more flow equals more power in the end.

@ C1DoG - Did you have it added to a stock exhaust or is your piping redone all the way up to the cat?

Shipping from Cali would still be cheaper than a new factory R/T muffler. I'm guessing about $60ish for shipping across the Con US.

i have this muffler currently..

http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/shop/ ... rig=842441

couldnt be happier.. nice rumbly idle, great at WOT, and deep and growly on normal accel... and the deltas have less drone inside the cabin, so quiet inside, loud outside. a little "tinny" if you get on the gas good in the first 20 seconds before it warms up, but after that.. vroom vroom.. (i think alot of mufflers do that though when cold).

mines a single exit though..
