Engine cooling question

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Engine cooling question

Post by Alex Kurdian » Mon Nov 09, 2009 3:09 am

Hi guys and gals I have a cooling question to ask
My car while outa action at the moment does something that I question
When my car reaches temperature ie the temp gauge in the cluster sits about half way on the dial no problem
If I pull over say for about 2-3 minutes and turn the car off for that time and then I turn it back on the temp gauge needle rises above the middle to about the next line for about 10-15 seconds untill the fans kick in and then she drops to half way as normal
It scares me for a second and then all is good
Is this normal? I only think it started doing this when I did my first coolant flush
Other than that the car operates at normal temp
Its like the sensors kick in and go hey whoa we are hot let's now cool?
Is this normal? Taaaa

What is does is that it gets to the yellow line no problem....then if I turn the car off for a few minutes and then come back the needle rises to the green line for about 15 seconds and then drops to the yellow and stays there...it does not move from the yellow line when driving at all...

You say you flushed the system...have you been "burping" it on occasion to release any air in the system?

Yeah, that's perfectly normal.

When you shut it off the coolant stops flowing through the block, so it gets a little warmer initially (untill the whole engine starts to cool off). So when you turn it back on it reads hotter untill the coolant that was sitting in the radiator (which doesn't get heat soaked as much) gets to the CLT sensor in the head.

:withstupid:

The system should "burp" its self, provided there is sufficient coolant in the expansion tank. As it heats, it should push the air out into the tank, then at shut down (for a few hours) it will contract, pulling the fluid into the system.
Granted, it doesn't work as well as a system with a radiator tank. So it takes more cycles to accomplish. Always keep a closer watch on the expansion tank level for a week or two after a coolant drain/refill.

That's a damn good job, making the out of focus match the rest of it. If the added marks had been more crisp, it prolly wouldn't have pwned me.
