Buying tires online...

Post by 2001 ACR » Sat Nov 21, 2009 7:59 pm

Ok, I'm NEEDING to buy 4 tires. I can't put it off any longer. My front 2 tires are now almost bald... So, I think I want to get a set of BFG G Sports. Are tirerack.com and discouncttiredirect.com reputable sites? It looks like I can get a set of 4 BFG's for around $360 after shipping. Oh, and discounttire's got a $70 rebate going on right now.

Also, do any of you guys actually buy the "protection plan" and 4 stem valves? Once I get them, do you know what major companies install them w/o charging an arm and a leg? Oh, and do I actually need to get my tires balanced and do an alignment job? I'm not made of ca$h you know...

Are your tires showing odd wear? If yes, then you will probably want an alignment. Be prepared to replace suspension parts as well, such as the tie rod ends.

You are going to have to check around your area for places that will mount and balance tires that they don't sell. Tirerack will have places local to you and give their prices. I'm pretty sure you can purchase the mounting and balancing from tirerack for one of their preferred installers.

Don't worry about buying stems from tirerack. The installers will pop those in for a reasonable price, unless you want fancy ones.

You ALWAYS need to have the wheel/tire combo balanced.

I've bought from Tirerack a few times and was very happy with my purchases.

Ive bought from both places.

I prefer discounttiredirect because they have a DC in Sparks, and I always pay for regular shipping, but get them next day because theyre so close.

As far as mounting and balancing and such, I cant help. Ive got local shop friends/hook ups for that.

It's the same for me at Tire Rack. Their DC is an hour from my house. Sadly they won't let people pick them up, would be nice cause it would save $60.

Odd wear? Well, my front tires are VERY worn and cracking because they haven't been rotated in 15k miles... Other than that, the outside of my tires may be wearing quicker than other parts. I dunno... I guess a tire shop could tell me. I didn't realize tirerack could give me prices on mounting and balancing, I'll have to look into that too.

As far as suspension goes, well, my ACR has over 135,000 miles on it, so I'm sure some things need to be replaced by now. I'll wait till 155k to bite the bullet though...

Tirerack can give you prices on their "preferred installers." They don't actually do it, unless you buy tires and wheels from them on the same order. Then they will mount and balance for free and ship them ready to go.

I've used Tire Rack before with great results and with shipping it's still way cheaper than local shops.

I got a set of Kumho Ecsta ASX's 205/50/15's for $69 a tires plus shipping from tirerack. Got them installed and balanced for $12.50 a tire, and got my car re-alligned for ~$70.

Man I wish I got these tires a year ago. They have such better traction...
