radiator for a 4 spd vs a 3 spd??

Post by TODD01R/T » Tue Nov 24, 2009 10:50 am

Hi There. I bought a new rad off of Ebay and after I ordered it I noticed that the outlet on the bottom was more to the center of the rad then the one in my R/T even though the overall dimentions are the same. I contacted the seller and sent him a picture of what he was selling and a picture of what mine looked like. His responce was that his rad was for a 4 speed ( auto I guess) and the other rad I showed him was for a 3 speed. Does that make sense? His add was for a 2000 to 2004 auto or manual. If this rad is made for a different year /model of neon, would I be able to get a different lower rad hose that's made for the different location on the rad?

Thanks... Todd

I think you got jacked.

As far as I know the the radiators are all the same for the Neons other than the SRT. The only real difference between the auto and manual is the cool fans.

The only difference for non srt radiators is whether or not it has a trans cooler in it.

Part Number: 5019214AA List Price $327.00
Cooling system - Radiator Radiator, neon, all, auto trans 2002 - 2004

Part Number: 5014580AA List Price $327.00
Cooling system - Radiator Radiator, neon, all, auto trans 2000 - 2001

Prolly the only difference is the internal cooler for the ATX fluid, is of increased capacity for the 4 speed.

I wouldn't use either internal cooler, but get an auxilllary ATF cooler, given the track record of late. (Coolers failing, mixing coolant and ATF)

The picture is prolly not even the actual part.

Since my car is standard and i don't need the Automatic cooler I guess I can just plug them. I was thinking that maybe this rad is for a newer model and I coud get away with a newer lower rad hose ( Shorter ) I'm not sure how to post pic so I hope these links work. for you to see what I mean.

This is the rad I bought:

So why were you even looking at ATX radiators?

I missed the R/T part in your first post.

This is the MTX radiator, IDK if there are any pics out there of an actual ATX radiator removed from the car, or any good pics in car. Maybe search through the project logs...

Note the two extra bosses to locate the lower hose. :-k

Thanks for the picture. I couldn't find any manual only rads on ebay They all seemed to say for ATX as well as MTX. I guess you just plug the atx cooler holes.. are all the rads the same on the neons from 2001 to 2005?

The Parts book shows the same pic for all years, with the outlet in the center.

Lower hoses are as follows:

5278033AD Lower hose, neon, all 2001 - 2002 $10.20 (3 speed atx)

5278950AB Lower hose, neon, all, 2.0l 2001-2003 $10.00

5278950AF Lower hose, neon, all, 2.0l 2004 $16.80

This is through www.dodgeparts.com, so your local dealer would prolly tell you it has been superceded to the AF number and charge the $16.80

Basically until you actually receive the radiator, you aren't going to know what you really bought. Since the lower hose is listed as the same, I don't see how the outlet can be 6" over, and use the same hose. Unless you trim to fit.

Thanks for all the help on this I just put the rad in this weekend. After some investigation on line I came to this conclusion. The rad I bought was from a 2003 to 2005 neon , or as we call it up here , SX 2.0. I had to order a newer style lower rad hose to acomidate the re positioned lower outlet on the rad. I did run into a problem with the fan shroud tabs not fitting into the bottom groves on the new rad but I just took a hack saw to them and now it fits. If it becomes to be a problem in the future, I will just go to a wrecker and get a SX 2.0 fan Shroud. Boy you never now how much you take for granted having heat untill you don't havit anymore. My wife is tired of hearing me tell her how hot my car is now...... maybe I will disconnect hers for a week ans see how much she likes it... Ha ha.

Thanks again... Todd

Well that answers the question as to if all radiator outlets are the same. ;)

I figured with the three locations on the bottom, they would have changed something along the line.
