CD case + 54 LEDs + soldering gun = great!!!

Post by Jenni » Thu Nov 26, 2009 4:58 pm

What would you do if you wanna have a blue lighted gauge and have no money for speedhut? And you don't wanna waste your money for wedge led bulbs cause you have a shitload LEDs at home?
(And you love it to solder, to trie, to tinker - to make your own things and be proud on your hands work like me?)
Easy thing - take you soldering gun, a cd case, a marker, a 3mm drill, some small wires and just make your own lights.
Yeah i know - the inside looks somehow strange - but it works and the result speaks for itself.

Whatever an eralier owner tried to do: He broke one of the gauge mounts while removing it. Moron!

CD case is a good template to mark the LED positions and to hold them for the soldering progress
(the fat wires were just try and error - fortunately i found something thinner)

There it is: 54 LEDs sitting unter the gauges

Yeah it is AWESOME bright. I really love it.
I just left the old bulbs in their sockets that they can light up the needles and the red area. They were almost invisible with only the blue LEDs .
And - the LEDs are sooo bright that they absolutely outshine the bulbs. So no negative effect for the gauge overlay!

Damn that is BRIGHT. I would like to have brighter LEDs because the blue Byvamp ones sucks and they're too dim.

it is not that bright. it's hard to make a picture in the dark and to picture how it really looks. But i guess the picture kicks ass.

But yeah it is bright - but not too bright.

I'm not blind after 30 minutes on the road.

And: First i tried white LEDs - but i was not impressed from their light output. The color wasn't blue enough!

hmmm - maybe i could offer the "LED mesh". No idea how much i should ask therefor. But i guess all the handcraft will make it more expensive than the silicone led strip or the wedge bulbs method.
And it is not easy to install it in the right place in the gauge.
So if you can copy - do that. But for me it is too complicated to go professional with that.

Wow, that would drive me bloody crazy, I don't know if I am sensative to light or something but I have to have my dash on almost the lowest setting when driving at night. That thing would blind the shit out of me!

Looks awesome! I did something similar with my 1st gens HVAC controls.

For you guys worried about your night vision the LEDs can be dimmed slightly but after they drop to a certain voltage they just wont be on anymore. You could also do red as it wont affect your night vision.
