$$$bottom end question.

Post by pyistazty » Fri Dec 04, 2009 1:59 am

I'm putting this here because its a question not about a neon. I found a 96 awd talon tsi for $800, says probably needs new bottom end, and the seal on the radiator cap is broken. Anyone work with one of these cars before?

The 4G63's are pretty easy to work with most of the time. One suggestion I would make though is try to find a good 6 bolt motor for it. The 7 bolts were very prone to crankwalk.

i was reading on importuners.com that i found through google, that theres a rep for DSMs to be unreliable, but that because most people get them and just want to bolt on and and do regular maintenance. Sound familiar? haha.

Yea i haven't looked at the DSM forums yet, but i have a friend signed up on there, he drives a stock ass auto FWD eclipse, haha.

My car? Thanks if it is lol.

And I've pulled a motor and trans out of a 96 tsi. Not that bad, and a very fun car. Only hard part was bolting up the ptu(I think they called it that. Part that sends power back to rear axles.)

For $800 I say do it. Has a lot of potential.

Agreed get a 91-93 shortblock use the 94-99 head and crank the boost and fuel. The 6bolt block is capable of 500hp without changing the pistons properly tuned like the SRT's are. Stock block's can easily make a 12sec car with boost and fuel...

i would but they took it off craigslist. I found another one for $2800, which is over priced by a lot according to KBB, i'm gonna try and talk the guy down unless he has some good stuff done under the hood.

dont waste your time with the 2800 one just wait it out and depending on what style you like (first gen or sec gen) is were you chosse what year. first gens are the 6 bolt from begging production to the middle of 92 92 in a hlf and up are 7 bolt. best way to find out is by the trans there is a bend inwards on the oil pan look at any regulare 7 blt and it wont have it. only the six bolts do. also if you want a second gen you will want one in the years either 95 or 99. 95 has the least probable crank walk issue. unless the car was beat the hell out of. and the 99 are the second best as far as crank walk. now here comes the hard part. gsx or gst. depends on what you prefer and what your goals are. draags and quick launches are gsx things top speed is the gst. plus they are better as high cars. the website mention is only for 95-99 versions dsmtalk.com and dsmtuners.com are for anything dsm.

AND TO CLERRIFY THE DEAL WITH CRANK WALK
ONLY 2 TO 6 PERCENT OF DSM ALTOGETHER INCLUDING THE 420A CARS GET IT. IF YOU SPIN A BEARING CRANKWALK IF YOU BLOW YOUR OIL PUMP CRANK WALK IF YOU BLOW YOUR HEAD GASKET CRANKWALK
with a dsm read read read read read and read some more. if you dont then you will become just like every other dumb ass who say crankwalk. i have spun the bearings in my 93 tsi awd 3 times because i boost to much at rebuild time thats my fault as a driver, lol. but as long as you mike the bottom end then you will be good. ands as clarification every evo prudeced beside the 10 has a 4g63. look at the diagram and almost nothing was changed beside the crank it self. was updated for the evo line up. any more questions?????

Well to be honest, I don't plan on making this a beast of the car. Yes, I would like to work on it, but I don't plan on going for a 10 or lower second car, lol. I just plan on keeping regular maintenance, keeping it clean, then think about maybe a heavy performance upgrade somewhere down the road. I think I can probably talk the guy down, as I'm most likely going to have 3 other people there who know more about cars than i do, and a printed out KBB that says his car is only worth 1875 in excellent condition, stock that is.
