1st gen ATX/MTX tranny

Post by Adionik » Wed Dec 09, 2009 8:26 pm

Okay, new tranny was fucked. Long story short.

Can I put a 1st gen ATX or MTX tranny in my car?

02. Guessing there might be a TCM issue...?

ATX idk..

MTX Yes, just use your bellhousing.

1st gen = cable bellhousing/clutch
2nd gen = hydraulic

Your biggest issue will be getting a VSS signal to the PCM. A 31th ATX, and an MTX are going to pose basically the same challenges, other than pedals/hydraulic clutch parts for the MTX.

You could prolly remove the TCM, because nothing will be attached to it, unless it is needed for the VSS to feed to the PCM.

You could prolly use the wiring harness if availble from the (2GN) donor car, and it would be plug and play. An '01 pcm/'02 MTX PCM would be the icing on the cake.

VSS = Vehicle Speed Sensor: Speedometer input. Amongst other things.

You will need a 4 speed if you go with another auto trans.

Only if he doesn't swap axles(half shafts). I forgot about those.

The '01's had the 31th so it would just be a matter of sourcing an '01, and swapping at least the complete engine bay harness/PCM, for either tranny choice. The 31th could come from any year, but an '01 donor car would have everything needed: shifter/cables etc.

To with a 3 speed over a 4 speed would be such a PITA, more than it's worth. He already says the yellow one is slow, imagine when he puts a trans in it that will make it slower.

So true, but at least what I gave him can be useful for either one. A 5 speed would naturally be the better way to go.

you'd be better doing a MTX swap. It'll probably be more cost effective in the long run... how much have you spent so far on your atx?

No, the 3 speed was used from 1995 - early 2002. 2002-2005 got the 4 speeds.
