need help wiring intake mani with just harlan rpm switch

Post by vi_ryder » Thu Dec 17, 2009 1:16 am

I'm just about to finishing the mag swap and funds running low. so i have a harlan rpm switch and is wondering if any one knows how to work the intake mani mtv motor with just that. i already checked daaboots post but some of his pics aint up. and the diagram is kinda confusing so what gauge wires, what wires i need to tap into and wire are they located. pics or diagram would be a big help.

Im actully doing the same thing in a week. Hook the RPM switch up, wire the signal wire to the relay, then connect relay to the manifold wire and you are all set.

You can find instuctions under the shift light link. The link for rpm switch doesn't seem to work...

This is from sneakers O'toole's how to. The neon's wires should still be the same for the needed inputs.

sneakers O'toole wrote:this is for the people who don't want to bother with the WOT switch. i have it set up to open once from 4900-6800 RPMs and it works fine, you can only hear the intake sound get deeper at WOT though.

ok, here we go..

:EDIT: so yeah, i cleaned up the wiring on this and changed some things for an overall cleaner install. i also put the relay INSIDE the PDC and added quick disconnects to the wires noted with *.

MSD SWITCH:

*white wire: goes to the blue/pink wire on your coil pack harness. (this is your RPM reading)+(added quick disconnect)

*red wire: goes to the green/orange wire on your coil pack harness. (switched 12v source)+(added quick disconnect)

black wire: goes to ground. (i grounded mine on the ground next to the PDC)

yellow wire: goes to the yellow wire on the relay.

RELAY:

*pin 30/blue wire: goes to the gray wire (ground) on the MTV. (added quick disconnect)

pin 87/yellow wire: goes to MSD yellow wire.

pin 86/white wire: goes to ground. (again, i grounded mine on the ground next to the PDC)

pin 85/black wire: goes to 12v source. (hooked mine up to blue/white wire off the fuel pump relay in the PDC)

MTV:

*red wire: goes to pos. battery terminal.+(added quick disconnect)

*gray wire: goes to the relay pin 30/blue wire.+(added quick disconnect)

i also hooked up a ricer LED as an indicator for the butterflies opening. easy to do, just hook the LED pos. to a 12v and hook the LED neg. to the MTV ground.

before = rats nest.

after = not so bad.

I'm about to this in the afternoon I/m still confused the write up from viewtopic.php?t=9180&highlight=magnum+intake+manifold
and viewtopic.php?t=44887&highlight=harlan
are different and wired different. i saw about 4 or more diagrams the more i read i get confused with all these diagrams. i just want to use the Harlan and relay. so can someone walk me thru this. some say use coil pack some say use fuel pump wire and i don't know where that fuel pump wire is. so any help will be appreciated greatly

i'm not familiar with the harlan switch, BUT, if you can find out..

1. what color wire is for the rpm reading.
2. which color wire is for the switched 12v
3. which color wire is for the ground
4. which color wire activates the secondaries (through the relay of course)

then you can just use my diagram and just plug in your wire colors, because what the wire is used for is in parenthesis anyway.

a bit off topic, but i gotta say...don't expect a huge boost from the manifold..the car won't fall on its face as much after 5k...but, meh. get at least a mag cam too, it helps. with both, the car doesn't pull THAT much harder, it does however keep pulling to the rev limit where-as it wouldn't before.
