save yourself the headache & weld those panels in. thats what i did on my neon. i know a good welder can be expensive, but flux core welders arent worth a damn. i promise you will be better off if you just weld those suckers in

I agree with Dan and Sean.

Do it right the first time, or you're going to be kicking yourself in the ass later.

yeah im going to go with the welding, i dont feel like dropping out the motor mid-seasons and fixing the firewall, and this work why get lazy now, im just worried about metal warpping, should i hammer and dolly as im welding it. the welder im using isn't really cheap its a lincoln migpak 140, the reason im not using a "real" welder, is do to only 110 at the girlfriends, it is a ture mig , i just didn't have any gas for it so i was using flux core, could i get away with using flux core on this stuff dan or do i need to go buy a bottle of gas. im using .030 wire would it be better to drop to a small wire? any pointer you can offer helps.

Ok I just read thru your thread and I love ur car great work. But I have a question... I also will be shaving my engine bay but, I am new to this . What kind of welding is necessary for this? I am a big noob to welding, I obviously wont be doing the welding myself, but I know there's different types of welders so what do I ask for?? I want to start this project next week but all my questions are holding me up lol

when welding in those filler plates. tach it in every inch or so. once you make one pass, let it cool down. then weld another round. Patience is key with this. after every couple rounds, grind the welds smooth. Pay attention to how hot the metal is & as long as you do that, you wont warp the metal. PATIENCE is key, trust me

would cooling the welds with a wet rag , be a good or bad idea?

that would still warp it. i usually put a fan next to the panel i am working on to help cool it.

Much better! You could work on multiple holes at once if you are worried about not letting it cool enough.
