Srt-4 Steering wheel "re-wrap"

Post by Caraudioholic24 » Fri Jan 01, 2010 10:16 pm

Ok so Ive been on a hunt for a "Mint Condition" Srt4 steering wheel and Ive had no luck. A new one is like 500 bux so my next option is to see if I can get one re-wrapped. Is it possible???

I have the chance to get one but the back plastic was snapped off due to the air bag deploying. I think my plastic backing (i have an 05 SXT) will bolt on no problem and I was assured the steering wheel is straight. Im picking it up at a decent price so I wanna know if this is possible before I get my hopes up. Will the rewrap be as tight and uniform as the factory?? Thanks

I would also like to know this. I would imagine that an auto reupholstery shop should be able to do this?

I'm sure it could be done, but finding someone that will do it could be the issue. The original leather could be used for the pattern, but getting it re sewn onto the wheel may be tricky. They are a very tight fit. It would take a person that has a lot of talent at doing it. Plus getting it done for less than a hundred will be a bigger challenge then finding the person to do it right. I think part of the reason they cost so much new is they prolly aren't making a huge profit on them.

Well, even at 150 to have new leather sewn on. That's 350 less than what he's found good ones for, so that'd be worth it, IMO.

Plus then, I imagine you could get a custom color stitching like what Brodie was offering (although he wouldn't do a recover, just the stitch) or even a different colored leather.

Well I like the pattern the srt 4 came out with. Carbon fiber look on the top and plain leather on the bottom. I would love to have the carbon pattern on both the upper and the lower. Also I wanted the Silver stitching to go with the color scheme of the car (black and silver).

I was just curious if anyone has done one and the experience they had. I have only come across this one wheel that seems to be in decent shape. I would hate to try this and ruin the wheel and have to start all over again if its not gooing to be worth it.

IMO I wouldn't mind paying upwards around 250 or so for a BRAND new one from the dealer. Just cant see spending 500. I would rather spend that on the r/t compass and temp mirror. LOL

Kind of what I was thinking after I posted.

I've asked local interior shops and none of them will do it because it's a royal pain in the ass to do. You'd have to find a custom shop that would do it for you. There's a few up on SRTforums right now.

Everyone I have talked to say they will send pictures and I never hear back form them.

On the srt forums I was able to get ahold of one person but I'm kind of iffy since the airbag was deployed.

I know someone has one that they have collecting dust. LOL

I have one that is collecting dust. It isn't perfect tho. The airbag didn't go off.

i had a wheel recovered for one of my cars last year and it isn't cheap if you want a quality job. i had to send it down to the guy in florida and it was around $400 total with shipping costs.

yep, just relaying the potential costs. to get my wheel in similar condition would be around $1200 so to me it was worth it.

I wonder what it would cost to have a steering wheel sent out as the core and the leather wrapped part replaced with carbon fiber....

I actually considered something like that, but with wood instead of CF, do a part wood, part leather wrap.

If you got your bezel wrapped in the same wood Sean, I think it would look decent. But with only the steering wheel have a wood accent, it would throw off your interior completely.

I don't quite understand why the hell these wheels are so worn. Granted I used a wheel cover for my steering wheel's entire life, but it's in mint condition. I find the SRT wheel to be very slippery, and prefer the SXT wheel because it has more grip. I do however, love the look of the SRT wheel.

Oh, the bezel and wheel would both have wood accents, that's for sure.

After 90k with no cover, ever, my steering wheel isn't in the greatest shape.

With 110k. With no cover, I'd say mine is in damn good shape.

That's one Idea Ive been tossing around in my head. I have asked three different companies and no one wants to attempt it. I have a few parts in the interior that will be carbon fiber so that would just blend it all in. If you have any ideas let me know.

Yea I love the loook as well. I hate the look of my stupid foam one especially in pictures. I dont want to do all this work and have it thrown off by a stupid steering wheel.

Why don't you PM Brodie (supertrick_05) and see if he'll do it? He re-wrapped one for himself.

Brodie has specifically stated a few times that he will restitch a wheel (even has a thread on it) but he won't do the leather, he'll just reuse the leather you already have.

Not exactly the same thing.
