Can tires "pop off" rim while cornering?

Post by DroopDaddy408 » Mon Jan 04, 2010 1:24 am

I run 205/55's on my stock 15x6 snowflakes. Sometimes when I hit the twistys I hit 90 to 180 degree sharp curves. Since road is full of curves the pavement has a ton of grip. At times I worry since the tire is a bit tall that they'll "pop off". What do you guys think?

Only way I can think of is if it's WAY underinflated.

Aslong as the tires are new(Not old and dryrotted), and the proper size width for the rims it's not likely.

If they are under inflated, they are more likely just to roll real bad and tear the sidewall, and the rim up. But it is possible, just not very likely.

You'll likely slide before you get enough traction to rip them off the bead.

Ive run 205/55s on the snowflakes for years, with several autoX days. Never even thought about such a thing happening. And never has.

its just that when I was a kid( 18 or 19) my friend had a 81 rx-7. I was doing dough-nuts in a empty field and the rear tire came off the rim. The car was on the stockers but I dont know what kinda condition they were in, tho. Ever since then I've been kinda paranoid bout it.

Probably blew off the rim. Field as in dirt? Could've hit a hill or a rock or something. Many different factors there.

Yea, more like an empty lot instead of a field. Grass and bumps. Who knows, maybe there was a rock or some type of debris.

Since my car now has stock suspension it has a hardcore lean when I corner and I wonder what kinda pressure I'm putting on the tire.

Abusing a vehicle in a bumpy, grass "lot" doing doughnuts is A LOT different than cornering a vehicle on a paved road. Extreme situations are exactly that. Off-roader's use beadlocks for a reason, for example.

It sure does feel like body roll. Bad body roll. At the time of my off roading escapade I didnt think it would of popped off. I "wagged" my tail once on dirt/grass. There is alot more pressure on the side wall from hardcore cornering on pavement than sliding on a surface w/ little traction.

But I do agree w/ you guys. Off roading = self infiction.
