homemade K&N FIPK air intake, oh.. its 110% ghetto...

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

homemade K&N FIPK air intake, oh.. its 110% ghetto...

Post by cgneon » Sat Oct 22, 2005 7:35 pm

doin some comparisons between on my ATX, between fully stock intake, CAI, and homemade k&n FIPK intake aka warm air with a heatsheild..
picked up an extra airbox, and hacked it up..., jigsaw wouldnt work, had no way to clamp it, and dont have any real tools to do the job. so it looks rough, but it works, need to borrow a dremel from someone...... pulls alot harder, and runs higher up in the rpms before shifting.. , should be safe from water, leaving most of the bottom on, and should be a more effective heat sheild than the k&n's system itself being fully open..

anyway, its the first test of 3 setups...
heres a quick pic..

How does that still not just suck hot air in?
It looks worse than I expected. :o

lol the only good thing about the restricting airbox is that it kinda is a restrictive CAI it sucks the air from the resonator.

Now your sucking warm air and still got lots of restriction :s, i dont think this will give ANY gains from stock.

i wont deny, it looks like ASS!!!!.. but dont see how there is ANY restriction, full open intake, just hacked box to block water and SOME engine heat.....
i said from the start it was 110% ghetto.. and it probably wont stay.. driving around tonite, yes it pulls harder, but not worth practicality, and the noise is annoying.. .. was tryin to do a cheap heatshield WAI.. tommorrow i'm puttin the CAI on.... after that, if i get the resonator from BRR, will do full stock, but so far, stock w/ resonator removed is my choice..

hey im bored, and cant spend anything on the car due to hurricane supplies, and prep, and switchin to a new job,. have to do something to pass the time with limited cash....

so i will probably have a CAI for sale soon, if i decide not to keep it..

the restriction is the 90 degree elbow out of the box, he is not using it now. But he is sucking the hot air from the radiator now..lol

I actually made mine out of pvc piping through the fender well and had it but up to the back of my fog light. There is a vent on the 2gn R/t right there.

It was ghetto, $15 mod, but functional. The pvc didn't transfer heat like any metal tubing would. It just enhanced the use of the fender well and the removal of the resonator.

told you it was ghetto.. tried the hacksaw, but, not stable.. just used a drill and a grinder bit for the drill... took it off today though, noise was annoying...... gotta jet, in the middle of a hurricane party...

Just cutting the airbox like that, even if you put a heat sheild over it, will still restrict air flow.

The air flow comes from the snorkle through the fender, and once it reaches the 'open concept box' you made, you will suffer a loss of air turbulance. If you keep the box fully sealed, you acutally have more turbulance, thus better air flow.

Now, you say your on a budget, so here is a free way to get better air flow. Where the air snorkle goes into the fender well, it attaches to a resonator(big black box). Take that box out completely and throw it in the trash.

There you have it, instant improved air flow, 10 minutes of your time, free of charge.

WTF you could have such a beautiful ram air in there, but now its ALMOST useless.

thought more turbulence restricted air flow..., open box = free flow..

resonator in the fender has been long gone..
trying to find another to put back on for comparisons between the diff setups.., the hacked box is gone, back to stock airbox w/ res removed... couldnt stand the noise

there's diff theories on turbulence... obviously the better streamlined the air the faster it'll flow (highest volume) but some turbulence in the air stream inside the intake manifold is supposed to help fuel atomization. so, since SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many people seem to care about losing 1hp off their precious low end, turbulence will make you lose a bit of low end, which will be gained back in the top end. if any of you had/have first gens you might remember how some people with icemans sanded the inside of the tube right where it goes in the tb to make turbulence. i think people are generally still on the fence on this one though, because no one really took a scientific aproach to this....

What bout my ghetto "kinda" homemade intake...

http://www.oznium.com/gallery/viewfull.php?pid=12570

You cant see it all in the pic but it oges into the fender then has a cone filter facing towards the front of the car... Basically the same shape as the iceman...
