How are you calculating fuel mileage?

I have around 4 gal. of gas in my tank when my low gas light comes on. 2 gal when the gauge hits empty.
I calculate it by resetting my trip when i fill up and next time i fill up i divide the miles i have driven by the gallons i put in.

could it be due to a bigger size wheel or tire?
