Summer tires harden in the cold?

Post by neonpla » Sun Jan 10, 2010 12:45 am

I'm about to order some new tires to replace my Azenis, I have selected :

Now if I order these will I be able to slap them on? Or do I have to wait for the weather to warm up? I don't have to worry about snow or any of that shit so I'm not worried about traction. Our temps here have been ranging from 10-30 deg, What I'm wondering about is I know slicks harden in cold weather does this count for summer tires?

Someone chime in, Thanks.

hmmmm, very interesting question. I know a lot of you guys in the south are getting cold like you never experienced before.

I'd send Dunlop and email and see what they say.

Yes, the rubber does harden in cold temperatures. Its not drastic but it is enough to notice.
The summer tires also get quite dicey if there is snow on the ground since the tread isn't designed to self clean the snow out. Also since the tires tend to be wider for summer use the car will float on the snow leaving you with little to no control.

FYI, I have some falken Azenis for sale. 215/40/17 id let go for real cheap. I don't need them since I just got D-stars for christmas :).

In temps near freezing the tires will be hard as a rock, noisy as hell, and the grip is reduced. I've ran them in temps near freezing and the car felt completely different. As long as you aren't driving like a jackass or if you can get them to heat up just a bit you'll be fine.

The StarSpec tires are far better in colder temps than the original Z1's.

oh and F the Azenis. They are a garbage tire and way outdated. Sloppy Garbage tires.
