Repairing door edge

Post by 05sxt » Tue Jan 12, 2010 5:52 pm

I had a post a few weeks ago on how to bend out a small dent on the back edge of my driver side front door. Luckily fate decided to be a bitch in the form of an arctic blast that came through Texas last week. As a result, when opening my door in my parking garage at work, a blast of wind ripped it out of my hand and flung it conveniently into the rail on the wall next to me.

This new dent is much bigger than the original and was hard enough to break open the paint. FML. I need the opinion of all our expert body workers here on the best way to proceed with this situation. Should I bend it out and attempt to repaint the spot by myself? Will the whole door have to be repainted? Or is it better to just file a claim, pay the $500 deductible, and have my premium go up? Thanks in advance.

Ouch. I'd be afraid to bend that back, it's bent quite far and the integrity could be sacrificed. Putting filler on a door edge is always iffy as well. The whole door wouldn't need to be re-based but it would need to be re-cleared. Are there any Junkyards near you with a matching door? I know the one by me only charges 150 for a full door, much cheaper than your deductible.

You could get a shop to fix that for under 500 more than likely....look around before you file a claim.

Thanks for the help LSP. Unfortunately I already attempted to bang it back before I read your response. Afterwards the tactile strength of the sheet metal did not appear to be compromised but it did however, knock some more of the loose paint off.

I'll start looking around junkyards and also talking to some body shops to see what my cheapest options are. Thanks!
