What grit sandpaper should I use to prep wheels for paint?

Depends what condition they're in, what the surface is...etc.

I used some pretty heavy grit when I did my Snowflakes. Probably could have gotten away with something closer to 1000 really. It doesn't take much to get them scuffed up, so long as they are clean to begin with.

All four have been kissed. One is really bad, like it was in an accident. Two like they've been curbed and one is only slightly damaged.
I know, I might as well buy new rims, BUT I'M BROKE!!!!!!

Get a DA and something around 400 for the bad curb rash, and 800 for the light stuff. It will make your life easier.

I'd go 220-320 on the curb rash if its deep, 400 to final sand before priming.

Yea, one is bad. I've got some 60 grit. Would that work for the deep gashes? Another question, if I go with flat black, do I still need to finish with a clear coat?

If you want it to last, you want to clear it.

If you use the Duplicolor wheel paint you don't have to. 60 grit is too harsh unless you want to work up from 60 going: 60, 80, 100, 120, 180, 220, 320, 400
