Replacement Muffler
Replacement Muffler
Im Kinda new to the neon world and i don't know if im putting this in the right place or not but here it goes.
i have a completly stock 2000 neon. No mods have ever touched it (yet). have been looking around and yes using the search function but i cant seem to find what im looking for.
what im looking for is what is the size of the stock exaust piping?
and also for any of the people that have replaced their muffler what one is the best to use?
im not looking for a fart can exaust but something thats reasonabley priced and gives me a good loud sound and the poping back fire on the down shifts
and dont say just cut it off i do need a muffler of some sorts on it
and no im not getting an srt4 exaust
thank you to all that replay

Well I would tell you to look in the FAQ section, but alas, there are no pipe sizes in there.
For your '00, the exhaust size is 2"
If you want to upgrade to 2.25", you will need to go with late'01-up cat, midpipe, rear section. Tho the R/T midpipe is the only one that is 2.25" throughout. All else necks to 2" at the rear section connector.
For a mild sound, use the 1gn DOHC muffler. Then the R/T
Dynomax will be the next step, then the 40 or the cherrybomb will be the loudest. The trick is to find something that doesn't sound like a pissed off weed wacker. I am using a Walker "QuietFlow", and there really isn't too much that's "quiet" about it. Even with a resonator, it is about a hair louder than the oem R/T muffler.

I'm not being a dick, but... that sounds exactly like an SRT-4 rear section. They're annoyingly loud, drone, and pop and backfire on downshifts.RayWolf wrote: im not looking for a fart can exaust but something thats reasonabley priced and gives me a good loud sound and the poping back fire on the down shifts

ive seen some vids of exhausts with thoes mufflers and they dont drone but still give the good sound
the reason i say no to the srt 4 exhaust is because im not wanting to pay 100 bucks for the exhaust system or try to find one near me
the popping on the down shift i dont care but if it does i dont mind
but thanks for the imput thats all i put this up is to see what others have to say and make my desision for what im gonna get

The Flowmaster camaro muffler will sound pretty good from what I understand but you have to build the rest of the piping.Last edited by RayWolf on Tue Jan 26, 2010 2:36 pm; edited 1 time in total

The piping at the end of the 2000 cat is crushed to 2", but the cat piping itself is just under 2.25", cut about 3-4" off the end of the cat and 2.25" pipe slides right over it.occasional demons wrote:Well I would tell you to look in the FAQ section, but alas, there are no pipe sizes in there.

You wouldn't have to. If you don't have any money to spend, I'm not sure what you're looking for then? A muffler itself can be had for around $90 then you need the pipe to connect to the portion over the rear wheels, the tips and tip piping. Other than that you can buy a cheap rear section on eBay but like anything else... you get what you pay for. If you don't want to pay to do it right, leave it alone.RayWolf wrote:see i dont want to re do my entire exhaust with larger piping i dont have the time or the money to do that stuff

Then just get the Dyno Max PN# 17693 muffler, and an adapter, so the pipe fits the muffler. Summit racing is $136/shipping, but if you call around to parts stores that carry Walker exhaust, you could prolly get it for less.RayWolf wrote:see i dont want to re do my entire exhaust with larger piping i dont have the time or the money to do that stuff

That's basically what I just gave you. Anything but a direct fit oem type replacement will not be fun. The hangers are welded to the muffler. You will have a nightmare trying to get a Flow master, or cherry bomb to be supported properly. Unless you have a welder, and the skill to use it, clamping shit together will not yield to good of results. The only major difference between the DynoMax should be pipe size. You will need to cut the pipe from your muffler also. If you want it clean, your best bet would be to pay an exhaust shop about $60 to $80 to install it. A decent one will fit and weld everything for you. But from my Past experience, the DynoMax will only last a few years. IIRC the QuietFlow has a lifetime warranty. PN 40250. But I can't promise it will be loud. I have the V6 Camaro QuietFlow dual outlet. They have a SoundFX line also PN 18896, but those do not have a lifetime warranty.

Edit: The above, you could bolt on, as they are a direct replacement. The DynoMax is not.

Get an SRT rear section and weld a decent glasspack in there. Will be loud and deep, look decent, and be quality. Probably cost you about $100 for the whole setup, less if you weld it yourself.

get a fart can, or a dual outlet muffler off ebay. Both are cheap, eliminate the restriction of the muffler, and should bolt right in.
If you're going for sound though, I can make no promises... I've never run with a fart can. There was a time when i ran only a magnaflow muffler, and it was a good time. Not too loud, but very deep.
stock cat and magnaflow muffler FOR THE WIN.

Dude...go to that link I posted for ya. Listen to his muffler.. that's the magnaflow muffler..
After buying. It just take it to you locap exhaust shop and tell them to cut the oem one off and put the mag one on. $25 later you should be ready to go. That's it.
I haven't gotten mine..but it'll cost me like $30 to have it welded on.
End of story.

You'll get slight popping in deceleration with a straight through muffler. Otherwise, muffler-less is the only way to get it. Although it sounds haggard.

well thank you all for your input but it looks like i should just replace me entire exhaust
i had it up on the lift at school last night and looking it over i found out that someone has fixed it once before right after the second flex joint they welded (pretty shitty weld mind you) the mid pipe to that flex joint
so i riped off the broken flange that held on the wire cover and the wire cover
also my muffler sheet metal is pealing off
and also anyone ever see in their neons that the down stream O2 sensor is in the middle of the cat?
