Replaced Solenoid in 4 Speed Auto

Post by Alex Kurdian » Wed Jan 27, 2010 7:53 pm

Hi Guys
Ok I recently replaced my solenoid pack as it was leaking...I did however before the leak replace the oil with NON ATF 4...some castrol blend...yes DEXRON had its name in the title :-( FRAK FRAK FRAK!!!!

I did this a while back and it was like 2 months before I read on here that Chrysler gearboxes hate anything besides ATF stuff...So I went to Chrysler and did 2 fluid flushes...

Ever since that oil change I get a funky bump type shift when going into 3rd gear....only at very slow speeds though...like really slow...otherwise the car changes perfectly...downshifts and up shifts fine at normal accelerating speeds...

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking maybe the valve body could be playing up...?? This issue hasn't gotten any worse or any better...

No codes no nothing...? any clues? Chrysler haven't got any...

how slow are we talking? It is a bump shift that is like extremely noticeable.?. if not i would just drive it, especially if it isn't getting any worse.

but yeah only run the mopar ATF... it could just be wear from running the castrol

Dexron III, would mainly give less than ideal shifts. I doubt it would cause any additional wear. The clutch pack may take a while to get any residual Dexron out of the clutches. The friction discs are designed for part or ful synthetic, whichever ATF+4 is. It is far more slippery than Dexron. Sythetic ATF got put in a forklift at work, and it would not even move. We drained it, after finding out what actually happened, and it works fine.

My guess is it was either Dexron III, or IIE. IIE is common with Toyota (AisinWarner) ATX's

If the dealer doesn't know how to fix it, you are stuck. It's either drive it until it either smoothes out, fails, or have it rebuilt now. But if the problem is not a clutch related issue, but some software, or Solenoid pck issue, then you will be in the same boat, but a lot poorer. There prolly aren't too many options for transmission shops that are familiar with the 41te around you either.

I'm sorry I don't have a better answer. Without skilled trained ppl that can look at it, you are sort of screwed. I not saying they are dumb, just prolly don't see the volume of problems/quirks that they see in the States, or where neons/Chryslers are more common. So it isn't like second nature to them.
